Yellow claws?

Whiskers is my 16 year-old female cat . Why do cats nails turn yellow i color from the root? What i need to do, or buy to help my cats nail to be healthier?

I was told that as cats age, their claws get very tough and thick, just like in humans.  Not sure there is anything you can do about it as it is nature doing it's thing.
