We feed our 4 month old kitten Purina kitten chow dry food but also give her half a can in am and pm of Purina canned food. Should that also be kitten food? How long do you feed them kitten food?
Yes, it's better to feed her food specially formulated for kittens until she's a year old. A kitten's nutritional needs are different to an adult cat's as they still have a lot of growing to do. Good quality kitten food will ensure she grows to her full size.
You can feed mostly kitten food so your kitten is gettign enough nurtrients but feel free to feed the occasional adult food for variety
Most adult foods are formulated for all lfe stages anyways. Personally I feel that a kitten can be transitioned to adult food around 6 months old or so. if you worry about growth, feed the kitten food until the kitten is a year old. My Aby was eating adult food (I feed raw so there is no kitten formula) since he was weaned and grew up just fine
If you can feed more canned food than dry it would be healthier for your kitten. Canned food provides essential water and is more filling and digestible. Some peope feed mainly canned food and leave a small measured amount of dry food out for snacking on.
There are much better kitten foods out there than the Purina brand. Purina has pretty awful ingredients, IMO. You may want to look into a better quality kitten food, both dry and canned. Head to the local pet store (chain or independent) to see what is available. Blue Buffalo and Wellness have good kitten formulas.
I think I fed the boys canned kitten food till they were about 5 months old, then just switched to the adult stuff because they kept taking the adults' food anyway. I still feed kitten kibble (free feeding at the moment) till they are at least a year old. Then I'll still be feeding dry adult food after that, but will be measuring it out at that time. Unfortunately, can't afford to feed wet exclusively.
