Hello- I am a new member and joined specifically in search of a healthy wet food. Please read my story:

Backstory: I rescued my first kitten in high school, and was an uneducated cat owner- my family never owned a cat and I rescued my cat (now my father's cat) right after we had to put my fourteen year old dog to rest. Our vet never spoke to us about nutrition, and as an adult I realize it is probably what had ultimately led my dog to pass from cancerous tumors. My new kitten came with a bag of Science Diet from the SPCA and they recommended that is what I continue feeding her. I moved to the city for school a year later, and sadly my cat could not come with me. My dad took on the role as her care taker and switched her to a cheaper food, feeding her Friskies wet food because she would gobble it up. Since I left her she has gained SO much weight and is a HUGE cat.

Today, six years later, I now have a "new" cat in the city (my dad could not part with his new best friend, my original fur baby, despite me wanting her to movie to the city with me). I adopted her almost one year ago, this March, from a boutique puppy store that claims she had been abandoned there with a possible sibling. I was not originally looking to adopt anything, but I could not leave her in the tiny cage in the puppy store where she looked miserable, sleeping in her litter tray. She came home with me, for $75 and a complimentary vet visit from a 5 star vet in lower Manhattan. They passed her with a clean bill of health, estimating she was 2 years old. Spayed, shots, negative for FelV. I made sure to ask the vet what to feed her, because I wanted to do this right and I knew friskies was not going to cut it. He recommended several wet food brands, and added I could supplement with dry food. After looking into all of them, I found the easiest I could find was Wellness. I have been feeding her a variety of Wellness wet (mostly chicken- seafood variety as a "treat" on occasion) for almost the full year I have had her. Cans are expensive at $2.09 a piece at most retailers. Recently,  I noticed her stool has been loose. Often diarrhea like, and this weekend after I switched her litter to Swheat Scoop and didn't realize after replacing her old litter box and it was backwards so the door was sealed shut (terrible cat mom!) She pooped in her bed and there was bright red blood in a water stool. Naturally, I panicked and would call the vet but I am not in the financial position to make an emergency visit, not to mention NYC was hit with a massive blizzard this weekend and the subway was shut down so it was not an option. I spent all day googling and finally came across a possible culprit : CARRAGEENAN. I know I still need to take her to the vet, but it seems that I may have been feeding her a very harmful food for almost an entire year. She otherwise appears to be healthy, has an appetite and is playful and affectionate. Today I went and bought Soulistic after much research during my snow day yesterday. I am hoping to see a positive change before I take her to the vet next month. Basically, I am trying to find out if anyone else has had a similar experience with Wellness cat food. I am shocked and appalled that a brand that advertises itself as one of the leading healthy foods has such a harmful ingredient, a carcinogenic!!!!! I am looking for feedback for other healthy wet food options, price is not an isssue but I do not want to be feeding my cat anything that could be causing gastrointestinal pain or even cancer!

Here's a list of canned foods that don't have carrageenan:

http://www.thecatsite.com/t/240335/canned-food-without-carrageenan-or-guar-gum

http://www.thecatsite.com/t/291133/...nan-grain-free-wet-foods-to-feed-to-your-cats

I know carrageenan has been discussed here on TCS before. Here's a search result of the threads: http://www.thecatsite.com/newsearch?search=carrageenan

Some people find if cheaper to buy food online than at a pet store. Chewy.com and Amazon are popular places.

A food allergy or sensitivity can cause loose poop in some cats. Carrageenans is one culprit but there are many others. A limited ingredient diet can help. There are various commerical brands you can buy instead of prescription stuff.

Weruva is a wonderful product. They don't use carrageenan or meat by products. I reccomend mostly feeding your cat meat products, not fish. Make sure to feed them fish once and a while though. If you want no grains, get weruva - cats in the kitchen. Weruva truluxe uses meat from grass fed animals. Try combining multiple kinds for a great effect. If you want top line raw food. Get rad cat. It uses pasture raised and grass fed animals. No grains and carrageenan. Did I mention organic? It also controls your cats weight and decreases litter box door. Dry cat food leaves residue in the teeth where wet and raw cat food does not.

it seemed like Weruva was a very popular food while I was researching, but I do not know where to find it? Do most people order it online? It seemed like Soulistic was a popular alternative and manufactured in the same place as Weurva, but made specifically for PetCo or something I read was along those lines? Also, I would like to try raw food, but I also do not know where to fine it. W

Weruva is sold only at independent pet stores and various online places. You can find a local store using the store locator: http://weruva.com/stores.php Soulistic is made by Weruva and sold exclusively at Petco.

Petco sells the small bag of Nature's Variety Raw Bites for cats. Indepedent pet stores sell a wider variety of raw foods.

Radcat can be found online, but it is quite expensive.

Weruva can be found at petco and petsmart. Weruva is also really expensive

Soulistic is good too, it is made in the same way as weruva. You can only get it at petco and Amazon.

Weruva isn't sold at Petco or PetSamrt or any other chain pet store. It's likely the same in Canada. It runs around $1.25 for the original cans and $1.60 for the TruLuxe cans.

Independent pet stores are a great place to look for higher end quality foods and raw diets
Many places will special order you products if its something they normally don't carry in stock. Plus it's great to support a local business rather than a chain store

If you wanted to try Weruva, they have variety packs now available on chewy.com. $40 for twenty-four 6-oz cans. Not sure how big your cat is or how much she needs to eat per day. I personally wouldn't worry about by-products so much because if you think about it, when animals eat prey, they don't just pick off the "good meat" do they?

Friskies isn't a horrible food, but my guess is your father is over-feeding her. And not sure if he's feeding her wet or dry, but that can make a difference too.

I feed a variety of canned foods, but I have very specific needs for some of my cats, so I probably have foods with ingredients you don't like. I care more about things like phosphorus levels, protein levels and calories. If I start factoring in ingredients too, I'll lose my mind :)

You know what makes me sad? There really aren't any local places by me. I found one, it caters mainly to dogs, and mainly to the North Shore elite. ie EXPENSIVE. I live in the North Shore but am hardly elite. And I am ALL for shopping local, so it really makes me sad.

There are probably more places in the city, but I don't want to go to the city just to buy cat food. Plus that's not "local" to me.

I'm so sorry Arya (that must be her name, right?
) is having these problems. I'd wonder about the carrageenan, too. We don't feed it to our cats: I just don't feel comfortable with it, either.

Like others who've already posted, I'd highly recommend Weruva's Cats in the Kitchen foods: our cats love the chicken-based ones and they're very meaty and more reasonably priced than the TruLuxe Weruva line.

Our cats, who are also around three, have digestive issues, too, so we feed them a high-protein, low-carb diet and avoid ingredients like potatoes, peas, all grains, and most tapioca and fish. It's limiting but it keeps our list of brands pretty short! The other canned food brands we use are: Nutro Natural Choice (without carrageenan), Hound & Gatos lamb, Tiki Cat, Soulistic, Bravo, and Merrick limited ingredients. They like all of those and do well on them. We also feed them a lot of raw food, including the Rad Cat that others mentioned. It's great food! (I'm lucky to buy it at a great price but I also find that it fills the cats up really nicely, probably because it's pure meat with no fillers.) We feed a lot of Primal freeze-dried, which the cats love. Primal will send free samples, so you might want to write to them asking for those! Also, lots of pet food companies' Web sites have store locators that will help you find places to buy their foods.

I don't know much about where to buy cat food in NYC (other than having walked by a few stores!) but maybe @LisaMarie12 has some ideas for you. And, like LTS3 said, if you can find an independent pet food store near you, ask if they'll special order food for you. Most of the stores where I live will order just about anything for me. When all else fails, though, I buy at Chewy.com.

Good luck! I'm glad you caught your kitty's problem early and hope some dietary changes will get her back on track!

I did want to point out that Wellness foods are mostly pates, Weruva foods are shredded. So you want to make sure that your cat is okay with eating shredded meat before you buy a whole case. My cats just lick the gravy and walk away if it's not Pate. I feed Wellness, but am trying out the Merrick Limited Ingredient cans. They're pate, don't contain carrageenan, and they're pretty reasonably priced. At Petco, they're about $1.50 per 5.5oz can. And even cheaper online.

It's actually surprisingly difficult to find a small local place and the city- and most of them still carry the "bigger name" brands of "natural food," like Wellness. So far she is loving the Soulistic I bought- after reading through lots of other threads I am going to try the chicken and pumpkin, I didn't know that was so good for digestive health. She's passed 2 stools since I've fed her the soulistic one solid and than another loose. Hopefully after a week there will be improvement, otherwise I'm terrified of what the vet might say if there is no change! :(

Lotus Just Juicy is carrageenan free, so is Bravo.

I'm in NYC - if you want to send me a PM I'd be happy to help you find some retailers that may be more affordable than others.  (I am headed out though for work now and won't be back until later this evening.)

As others have mentioned, Chewy is fantastic and after $49, you can get free shipping. I realize though you may want to sample individual cans before committing to a case. Just PM me and I'll assist. :)

Pate foods are usually the better choice. Shredded / minced/ etc type foods can be mostly water / gravy with little actual food. It's always a good decision to buy one can of a variety of foods to try isntead of buying a whole case that a cat later deemes as "yucky".

Wellness does have a pretty good selection of non-pate foods: http://www.wellnesspetfood.com/recipes.aspx?pet=cat&ft=2

I did a asearch on the Weruva web site for NYC zip code 1001. The result was a whole list of stores in nearly every single borough that carries the brand. if the store sells Weruva, then it's very likely that they also sell similar quality brands of food. http://weruva.com/stores.php

I've been feeding Mingo Beyond dry food because other canned food always gives him diarrhea. I just checked the Beyond website, which has a list of complete ingredients, and carrageenan isn't listed for the dry or wet canned food. It's readily available at grocery stores. As I remember from my last trip, though, Beyond canned food was more expensive than Fancy Feast in the same size cans. Fancy Feast has been recommended a number of times on this site. I can't possibly read the tiny type on the cans, but I will try Beyond canned food the next time I go.
