Hello All,
Just joined as my husband and I have a question regarding our 13 year old kitty. Shadow has always been a house cat, never let outside. We just got home from a vacation in our motorhome and took him with us, just us three. We were gone for 18 days and had absolutely no problems with him. He did really well - rode well, ate well, used his litter box just fine, purred, slept with us as usual, and roamed around as he pleased. He has a carrier that has a mesh roll up door that was up so he could walk around the motorhome while we traveled if he wanted. Mostly he road in his belted in, secure carrier. Anyway, all was great. We arrived home yesterday, early evening. I carried him in his carrier into the house where he has lived for every day of his life. I set the carrier down to open the door and he immediately started yowling (more like screeching) and hissing. Finally dared to open the door after a few seconds and let him out and he took off to hide under our bed. He stayed there for the next 6-7 hours. Any time either of us walked into the bedroom to put something away, he would shriek like we were attacking him, even though our feet and our bodies never even came close to him. Totally baffled! This is the second trip in the motorhome with the exact same response. Any ideas?

Possibly it's the 'new' surroundings scaring him.  Can you bring in a few things from the motorhome that will smell familiar to him--pillows, cushions, blankets or something?

I had brought his blanket in and placed it on the floor in front of his carrier but he started carrying on as soon as I set him down. He was fine after the 6 hours of Holy terror and is fine now, acting like nothing happened. Just so weird that he acted the way he did. Did not think in that short of time he would have 'forgotten' his home of 13 years. You think that was all it was? Sure hope so! Newly retired and want to take lots of trips. Would love for him to come with. [emoji]10084[/emoji]️ But certainly don't want to stress him out. Like I said, we had no problems with him at the start of the trip or during.

Congratulations on being newly retired, and welcome to TCS.

Unfamiliar surroundings is the first thing that came to my mind.  I'm glad it didn't take him long to reacclimate!  Maybe other members will have other ideas or thoughts for you about his behavior.
