Has anyone gone through this and was the outcome the same as mine ? I have so many questions! Yesterday I took my 10 1/2 year old male cat in to my vet for his breathing, after x-rays showed the fluid in his chest you could not make out his heart. So my recommended a shot of lasix .25 mls. Blood work was fine; came home he started panting profusely, drooling and within coming home was dead in 45minutes! !! What happened ?? Can someone explain ?

It sounds like he had congestive heart failure. All that fluid in the chest is indicative of that. He was panting because his heart wasn't oxygenating his blood. The only thing that could have saved him was draining the fluid from his chest and strengthening the beat of his heart with meds.

Oh my goodness, I'm so so sorry :hugs:

Fluid on the lungs is a very common symptom of heart disease, and lasix is the drug of choice as it's the most efficient at clearing the fluid. The build up sounds extreme in this case, and it may simply be that his heart gave out.

Very rarely, a cat will have an allergic reaction to the drug (with the best will in the world, no drug can be 100% safe for 100% of cats).

Thirdly, the extra stress of the vet visit could simply have been too much for him, and the lasix just didn't have time to work. My Cali had chf, and he would sometimes be much worse for a while after a vet trip - usually if the waiting room had been noisy (barking dogs etc) or we'd had a long wait.

My heart is breaking for you - I still remember Cali's final respiratory failure, and it will always haunt me.

I wish there were something I could say or do to take away your pain :hugs:

Oh wow!  I'm so sorry this happened and can only imagine your shock and heart ache.  I have no words of wisdom or experience other than to say that my heart breaks for you.
