I rehomed a cat who had been living on the streets on December 14th, took her to the vets that week for her first vaccination and had her booked in for next set of vaccinations, spaying and microchipping three weeks later.

However, over the Christmas period I began to suspect she was pregnant. I returned to the vets in the week she was due her second vaccines and told the vet I suspected she may be pregnant. The vet estimated she was about 5 weeks (8th January), so she didn't have any of the planned procedure done.

I've created two possible nesting boxes for her in my office and she is shut in there whenever my male cat is in the house as she began to display some aggression to him earlier in the week. On Thursday she managed to slip through my legs and escape, she had a very brief spat with my male cat who immediately ran away and hid in my bed. When I got her back in the room I noticed she'd bled.

I called the vets straight away and took her to the vets again (emergency appointment), they kept her in over night and monitored her and gave her an examination in the morning before discharging her. She is still spotting though and, whilst I've been reassured by the vet that nothing is going particulary wrong, I am still anxious.

Last night she was playing with her catnip toy and whilst she was lying on her side her back legs were shaking, they stopped when she moved, could this have been from the pressure of the kittens? I have noticed a couple of times today her back end has been shaking for brief periods of time and then stopped for ages before happening again. When she initially bled it was blood red and the spotting on the carpet looks red or reddy/brown.

She does keep going in the nesting box, a couple of times I've gone in and had a mini panic as she's normally waiting behind the door ready to greet me but instead found her curled up in the box. Since yesterday she keeps scratching against the door or meowing although when I to her she's generally relaxed and calm.

Has anyone had a similar experience to this? Hopefully I'm being over anxious I just want to make sure she is ok, I've never had pets that have had a litter before.

Thanks

I'm not sure about the spotting/discharge but our pregnant cat is due anytime and she is sleeping in her nest more and not as active. She is confined to a room as well and. The past 2 days will occasionally scratch on the door so that I will sit with her. Some cats like someone there when they are giving birth too.

Thanks for your reply, yeah I think that's why she keeps scratching so I'll go and sit with her, up until recently she's always been fine in the room. She's only young (vet reckons 8 months) and quite small she was 2KG when I rescued her but with the baby weight and plenty of meals everyday is now weighing 3KG. So I'm guessing she's probably a bit confused as to what's going on with it being her first (and last) litter!

The shaking is not good.  It could be a calcium deficiency.  do you know her history at all?  What are you feeding her?

I would at least call the vet and see if they want to see her again.

She's on a combination of dry and wet kitten food, and whatever adult food she can steal from my male cats food bowl before I remember I've left it down! She also gets special kitten milk occasionally as a treat and has regular supply of kitten nutrient boosting treats. I've just been back in with her and she was eating, shaking when her head was down but as soon as she lifted it it stopped. Then when her head went down to eat again it started again. I'm wondering whether it's pressure on a nerve but yeah maybe a call to the vets is needed.

She wandered into my sisters office in December, three months earlier the local cat charity had rescued a mum and her litter, apparently they suspected they'd missed one and we think she was the one. So she'd been fending for herself for at least three months.
