Update:

He's hanging on now. We're home, and he's on a heated blanket to keep warm.

The vet said that she cant guarantee that he'll pull through, but I'm trying to stay hopeful.

Recap of the visit:

I went in and they at first wouldn't take him because the vet wasn't there yet. I insisted that the vet techs take a look anyways, as he's having trouble breathing. They took him back and there was a lot of conversation, calling the vet, and about three different price estimates given to me at first. They thought he was plugged with a blockage, but upon further look they saw that he's not actually blocked. They set him up on oxygen while they waited for the vet and it helped him some. There's something in his lungs and it was making concerning noises. They took his temp and his heart rate. Temp was scary low and heart rate was scary high. They bundled him up with heating pads and hot water bottles to keep him warm.

When the vet came, they took a urinalysis, gave him some SC(subcutaneous fluids), and pain meds. The urine they got for the sample was mostly blood and they couldn't find a whole lot of bacteria in it. I couldn't afford a culture or any bloodwork, so we skipped on that.

Due to the re-occurance of the UTIs and all the blood that was found today, she diagnosed him with interstitial cystitis and told us to give him lots of water and watery food, which we've been doing anyways. When we have the money, we'll go back for a culture/xrays/blood work to see if there's something else going on.

She's not entirely sure why he's got lung issues and why he's so sick, as the interstitial cystitis doesn't usually have this effect. I suggested he inhaled water when he was bobbing his head in the water and with his hard breathing. She said maybe, which would mean pneumonia.

As we waited, his temp went up and she said his lungs sounded a little better. They gave him a shot of antibiotics.

After that, there wasn't much else they could do and sent us home and told us to keep him warm.

When I started typing this, he was sitting on the couch with the blanket, but then he jumped off and went to the kitchen and laid down on the cold floor there. I put the blanket on the floor then and put him there with a little bit of water(which he lapped at) and he laid down again. Now, he's got his head on his paws and is resting I guess.

Ill try to keep you updated with his condition through the night.

Total visit was about 300 dollars. I paid 85 of it and my mom the rest. They don't have payment plans, which sucked. It wasn't bank-breaking, but it is bring us up over 800 total for his recent vet visits, and we still need to go back for x-rays and stuff that I mentioned before if he starts to perk up after this. Thank you for all the financial suggestions and such. I'll look into it!

If anyone needs to know(now, or in the future) specifics about what cost what, I'm more than happy to tell.

Thank you all once again.

The bill is charged right now. I've looked at mostly everything that's linked from this site about financial stuff. I don't think I qualify because the organizations don't seem to usually cover testing, which is the stage we're at right now or bills that have already been given prior to application

Update on Booty(I figured I should tell you guys his name, silly as it is):

He doesn't seem to like the heated blanket. He keeps getting up and walking away from it. I'm not sure what to do about this, because we need to keep him warm.

Just cover him with an unheated blanket. Can you make a tent for him? I do for my guy. I fold a quilt into quarters or withstand and put him into the top fold. He stays nice and warm. You also will know where he is.

He's under the blankets right now. I noticed his eyes look wet and in the corner, there seems to be something covering his eye? I dont know if its usually like that and just stands out because its wet or what. I also dont know if its good that they look wet, either...

Also, if you can find a fund that will either cover a bill that I got prior to applying and has already been "paid"(I think I might be SOL on that one) or one that will cover the diagnosing/testing(blood work, cultures, xrays, ect), I would love to see it. I just can't seem to find one that isn't specifically for non-emergency, non-basic care, cancer or an already determined disease.

Sorry for any delay on my part, was at work and just got home. I know it's already said and done, but I also, thank goodness, have not needed to have a cat on oxygen.

Pee in the blood, especially if it's chronically, could mean a few things. Interstitial cystitis is usually diagnosed after everything has been ruled out (including bladder stones), so surprised they threw out that diagnosis. Unless it was just due to the fact that there would be nothing they could do if it was that (that's the route we went down with Sara, who has cherry koolaid for pee).

Crystals/bladder stones haven't been completely ruled out, but he's been on food that was suppose to dissolve them and also had an ultrasound from another vet that didn't show anything. They don't feel a blockage with him, so she said it was unlikely.

I looked up the third eyelid and it says it comes out when they're sick(like you said). It also said upper respiratory(which is what the vet said) problems, and should clear up with antibiotics(which he's on). Ill try not to worry about it too much for now...

Also, I looked at another pic from when he was healthy and it looks about the same(he looks a lot more tired now- droopy eyes, not really looking at me) with the third eyelid. He was sniffle-y awhile ago, so thats probably it. Maybe all this stress has brought the respiratory stuff he had awhile ago back up...

I have a question. Can I use petroleum jelly with cocoa butter on his rectum, or coconut oil? I want to take his temperature again, but don't have any lubricant other than these.

You can put a bit of petroleum on the thermometer tip, yes.

Although it hasn't been long since you've been home so I wouldn't add that stress right now.

It takes 2 days for the antibiotics to start effecting him.

Please do not feed him dry, need to keep him as hydrated as possible now and dry sucks up alot of his fluids.

I did it just to see if we were keeping him warm enough. He didn't put up much of a fight(which is concerning) but it was normal and he's not cold, which is good.

I'm not feeding him dry. I tried to offer him wet food with some water mixed in, but he wouldn't eat it. He's been drinking tiny bits of water.

His breathing seems to have gotten bad again. He was okay when we got home, but now its back to how it is before we left. I think the vet called it shudder breath. He seems to shudder when he breathes, and his mouth is open. It doesnt look good.

Oh my gosh.

If there is any way you can spare more money for him I think I would get him back there and get him under an oxygen tent for a bit.

Maybe further testing.

I know, it's very expensive, but if the money is there and it may make a difference in his life and the outcome, you might want to think about this.

Otherwise, you have done what you could, and we will all be hoping for the best outcome.
