Do you use a de-tangler after you shampoo?

I don't know if it's because of the winter weather or what, but man, my hair is getting very tangly after I shampoo. I condition the heck out of my hair and it's still getting difficult to get my pick through it. And I'm getting a lot of breakage. Just started a couple weeks ago.

I used to use Strand Saver by Garnier when my hair got bad, but haven't been able to find it in the local stores now for a while. So now I'm using a Miracle Oil, also by Garnier. While I like the way it smells, it's not doing much to get the knots out. And it's taking forever to pick through my hair because I don't want to just yank on it. It's getting frustrating and it's taking forever to get my hair combed out after a wash. My hair length is down to right around the middle of my back and it's fairly thick and naturally wavy when I don't use the hair dryer on it. This last time I was in for a root touch-up, my stylist said that my hair is really getting back into shape; that it's nice and soft and full again and very shiny (I used to use WEN, until I started losing my hair and it's taken almost 18 months to get my hair back to where it should be.).

I comb my hair out, then get into the shower. Wet it down, shampoo, then condition and let it go for a couple minutes. Rinse. After I'm out of the shower, I put the oil on my hair. It takes me about ten minutes to brush, floss, etc. Then I start to comb through. It takes a while! Once I get all the tangles out, then I blow it damp, not completely dry.

Shampoo:  Switch between Framesi (It's a hair follicle release shampoo) and Garnier Triple Nutrition

Conditioner: Garnier Triple Nutrition

Blow Out: Garnier Blow Dry Perfector

And then after my hair is dry, I put One 'n Only Argon Oil Split End Mender on the ends of my hair....I doubt it does much, although my stylist has noticed a change in the ends of my hair. But I like the way it smells.

If you use a good de-tangler after your shampoo/condition, what do you use? Thanks!

I don't use a de-tangler, but I find brushing my hair to get all the knots out before shampooing makes a big difference to how easy it is to brush out afterwards. The only detangling product I've used is a leave in conditioner spray - I think the one I used was VO5 Miracle Mist. It worked well for me, but the disadvantage is that it does leave a build up on your hair over time.

I used to use a detangler when my hair was long. I forget what kind but I think it was Aussie brand. I seem to remember a pink kangaroo, lol. Now that it's short, it gets fuzzy instead of tangly :tongue2:. I use a leave-in cream. Suave professionals, ginger and honeysuckle:

The only one I use is the conditioner. I use Aussie now, but have used others. I used to have very long hair, which got tangled very easily. Conditioner made no difference. I had it cut to shoulder length, and now it's fine.

DD and I still keep an old friend around. I remember using this stuff when I was a kid. The packaging has changed but it still works great. DD has very thick, very curly hair and she uses it all the time.

Throwback Thursday- remember what it USED to look like?
I remember that
My Mom used it all the time on my hair when I was a kid.

A wide toothed comb might help to comb out the tangles and prevent breakage.

I use a 2-in-1 shampoo / conditioner and don't have any problems with tangles / knots in my shoulder length thick somewhat coarse hair.

Have you tried letting your hair completely dry first, then combing it?

I know it sounds scary at first (It did for me, baby fine hair here! I was worried about dealing with a rats nests of knots)  but it helped significantly. It actually brushes out way easier than one would anticipate, and it also prevents breakage, as wet hair is much more prone.

I get out of the shower, put in Nuxe prodigieuse oil, let my hair dry completely, then comb it.

This is the Nuxe:

It's a bit pricey, $25 where I am for the smaller bottle. But it's really nice quality, and lasts a long time, and so for the only thing that works well on my hair. Just a little bit moisturizes very well and stays that way. And it is not heavy.  So I find it is worth it to spend extra for the better stuff.

Another Shampoo/Conditioner product that has a great reputation with my customers at work is Fekkai.

Again, it is pricey, and normally I hardly push anyone to get a more higher cost kit when it comes to shampoos, but lot's of people like it for their problem hair, from dryness to frizzyness. I'm not a hairdresser myself in terms of cutting and styling, but do work in cosmetics that includes hair care along with skincare and makeup, and two of my coworkers are former professional hairdressers.

Other tips:

-Also, if you are able to, try washing your hair under cooler water instead of hot. I personally find this hard in the winter
Cooler water closes the hair cuticles, helping with moister.

-Use a comb instead of a brush after drying your hair.

-Don't bunch up your hair when washing your hair, or when drying it with a towel. When drying, pat your hair gently with the towel, nor leave the towel on your head. Wrapping your hair up in a towel can actually lead to more tangles.

Hope this helps! And good luck!

Did you know that there's a class action lawsuit against WEN for just that reason?

I use this
I need to start ordering it from Amazon, much cheaper than what I pay at the salon.  A bottle lasts me a long time but my hair is much shorter than yours.  It's actually a leave in conditioner but it also detangles.  I have very fine hair but it still doesn't weigh it down at all.

Aveeno makes a really nice leave in conditioner spray. I have fine hair too and it doesn't weigh it down at all.

I have short hair these days, so no tangles really to speak of :D I do have very thick hair also so if it gets past a certain point, I get so many tangles, so I don't let it get near that length anymore. I DO put a lot of conditioner on it in the winter, leave it on while washing the rest of me, then rinse for a few seconds (don't wash all the conditioner out). I also don't wash my hair every day in the winter, more like every 3-4 days at most. I become a walking ball of static in the winter, and it's at it's worst after washing my hair. I used to put Downy in my hair for goodness sake :lol3: Stopped that after I started dyeing my hair though.

I have a wide tooth comb in shower. I shampoo then condition. I comb through in shower while conditioner is still in and then rinse. I rotate between Tresame and Paul Mitchell. I find that the Tresseme combs through better than the Paul Mitchell. I have hair to middle of my back, thick and naturally wavy. I do blow my hair straight.

I have a wide tooth comb in shower.
When I purchased WEN, it came with a wide tooth shower comb.  I threw out the product because it was making my hair fall out, but I kept the comb.   I use it to comb through my Pantene conditioner. My hair isn't long. The back is about jaw length and the sides a couple inches shorter, but I have greying hair and the texture is changing. It's become more dry, coarse and wiry so I am noticing tangles after shampooing.  I have to leave the conditioner in longer and I also use Argan oil after I towel dry my hair. If I don't, my hair gets really frizzy now.

Oh, it is not only my issue that tangled hair, I use shampoo and conditioner, I'm not sure if conditioner makes things better always, also I have read that using conditioner before shampoo might be better, but haven't tried that.

Two days ago I spend good 40 minutes brushing my tangled hair, I don't like brushing my hair even normal amount, but that was really making me sweat, keeping arms up that long is no fun!

I thought it has been because of very cold weather in here, cat's are feeling it too, their fur is making lots of sparks!

My shampoo is Berner product that has some Tar in it which does help with scalp issues a lot, can't remember which conditioner, but I have heard there is no huge differences among them.

My son has long fine hair that tangles badly.
I've tried different shampoos, conditioners and detanglers and nothing helped.
I bout the "wet" brand detangle brush and it works wonders! No more picking the knots apart.
The brush was about 10 dollars.
I highly recommend it.

I have seen those de-tangler brushes and wondered how well they worked. They don't cause the hair to break or anything? I've noticed a lot of breakage in my hairs, too, and I think it's from the birds nest that I have after shampooing. Trying to get the knots out. I'm thinking it's the really dry heat indoors, combined with being outside at lunch. It's doing a number. I am the Queen of hair static!

Thanks for all of your responses! I'm going to check reviews on your suggestions and then go to Amazon. Thank you!

I do comb my hair out before showering. And I use a wide-toothed pick to comb it after showering. The oil that I use and the blow out perfector both have argan oil.

Natalie_CA, IMO, WEN is all hype. I've also read about it clogging water pipes. I think I used it for about six months or so and then started to notice huge amounts of hair in the shower drain. And in my comb. And OMgosh, the pumps you had to use! 16 pumps, 24 pumps! Shampoo twice, always. First time to clean the hair; second time for the cleanser to "bloom". They always say to use a bit of it as a leave-in conditioner, too.

I changed stylists during that time and the first thing she said to me when she did my hair was, "What in the world are you using on your hair? Whatever it is, STOP IT!" My hair was so incredibly soft and weak that if you pulled on a strand, it just broke. She gave me a protein shampoo and conditioner to try and I used that for quite a while. And then I finally got to the point where I wasn't seeing as much hair in the drain or on my pick. (You know, your hair can become too soft and that's not good either.) My hair stylist is strictly organic; I don't know if that helped my hair, but I don't think it hurt. She's really good. (The last time I was in, she told me that she just gotten a new customer, whose hair felt almost exactly like mine did the first time I went to her. She asked the woman if she was using WEN; the woman said she was, but she thought she was starting to lose hair. She told her to stop using it and told her about my experience.)

I've always had very thick hair, so I knew something was wrong. And it wasn't all age-related. It finally stopped coming out, but it took a long time to repair the damage from using WEN. I'll never use it again and I can't recommend it to anybody either.

I still have some WEN at home. Didn't know what the heck to do with the stuff, so I use it now to shave my legs, hoping that if it caused the hair on my head to fall out, maybe it will stop the hair on my legs from growing!
Once I"m done with the bottles that I have, then I'll be completely finished with the stuff.

I am always really leary of products that some hairstylists or super model is advertising especially when it comes with auto ship.  I think if something is really as good as they say it is then why can't it compete with other products on the shelves in stores or salons.  Cindy Crawford is doing the same thing with skin care products.  Her products are supposed to be from a French doctor, adding that personal care products come from France always seems to draw people in.
