So, my cat is 9-1/2 years old. About 6 years ago she suffered some sort of neurological event. After some research and some advice on here, I think my cat suffered from a bout of encephalitis. Back then, the Vet eventually came to the conclusion that it was a stroke, but looking back from the whole story, I think it was encephalitis.
Anyway, one of the residual effects from her neurological event is a desensitized right side. For the last 6 years she has walked with a slight limp, rolls her wrist a bit and takes short steps with her rear right leg. When you touch the little hairs on her paws on her right side she doesn't "flinch" like cats normally do.
Now, a few days ago she took a spill of the back of the recliner and hurt her (desensitized) right front leg bad. It was so bad she just cried and cried over everything and she had a terrible limp and didn't want to do anything. By the end of the day I could see was improving with rest and I figured it was a bad sprain.
It's been a few days and she seems pretty good sometimes and she limps worse sometimes and it seems to be related to her jumping up on things (like the couch) and then jumping back down. Watching her, she leads with her desensitized (and now sprained?) side when she jumps off something and that leg/wrist/foot is taking all the weight.
Like I said originally, she has always (since her mystery illness) had some sort of limp but over the last year or so it's varied a little bit from barely noticeable to somewhat noticeable. I really didn't think much of it but now am wondering if she has been injuring and reinjuring it for a while now?
Just thinking out loud what should I do, if anything, as a precautionary measure? She isn't getting any younger and I don't want her to have to deal with a joint issue as she gets older. I see online that they have little splints and/or walking boots for cats with neurological issues and things like that to keep them from knuckling and keep their leg in a proper position. Should I be getting one of these and does anyone have any experience with them? Anything else to consider? Maybe some sort of supplement for joint health?
We've already minimized the things she can jump on and made easy spots for her to jump down so now her biggest jump is about 18 inches on to padded carpet.
Thanks for any advice or help!
