Leroy has an upset tummy and mushy poop.  The vet prescribed liquid Flagyl in chicken flavor, 0.65 ml twice a day for a week.  What is the best way to give the Flagyl? I already gave him one dose, squirting small amounts into his mouth. He drooled and foamed and just wasn't happy. Can the Flagyl be disguised in canned food?

If you give it in food you need to make sure all of it gets consumed. Most cats love baby food (chicken or turkey Gerber 2nd step is perfect), so what I've done is put a spoonful of baby food in a dish and add the flagyl to that. I checked with my vet once before and they said that's fine. This works for me because my cat will lick the bowl clean to get every last bit of the baby food, and the medicine is eaten right along with it. I don't put it in canned cat food just because my cat doesn't eat her food all at once and doesn't always lick the bowl to get every morsel.

You can test a little bit of flagyl in a little bit of baby food first to make sure your cat will eat it. If he's still wary of it, you may have to squirt it in his mouth to make sure he takes the full does, but it is certainly easier for everyone if you can get him to eat it voluntarily!

I have no idea why vets continue to dispense liquid metronidazole when they know full well how horrible it tastes.  I'm embarrassed to say that I have no suggestions for you but I bet someone much more informed than I am will chime in. My vet always gives my cats pills and they take it like little champs.  Next time you should ask for pill form.  It's so much easier and less traumatic.

Fortunately Leroy is eating so mixing the Flagyl in wtih a little canned food shouldn't be a problem. I have Weruva on hand so it's easy to mix the Flagyl into that, topped with FortiFlora or crushed up stinky freeze dried raw if needed. I'll give it a try tomorrow morning. If it doesn't work, I'll pick up some baby food.

In all honesty, liquid Metronidiazole is the pits, even in food it is just too bitter...  The only way I got my Tiger to keep it down was in pill form, in a size 4 gelcap. I covered the gelcap with a piece of a  Duck Pill Pocket, which she would eat; then I gave her a spoonful of BeechNut Baby Food to chase it down.. (eventually she got tired of the baby food but I got her to take it for the 10 days!)

Sorry Leroy isn't feeling well:-(

Tried a dose mixed in with Weruva Goldie Lox. It was a no go even with FortiFlora
He ate some of the food but then didn't want anymore. He's normally a greedy pig with canned food. I didn't dose him again since I had no idea how much Flagyl he got inside of him. I think it's just easier to just hold him on the counter and just slowly squirt the Flagyl into his mouth and then follow up with with a meal to get rid of  the yucky taste.

Maybe canned tuna juice is stinky enough to disguise it? The reason I don't like to mix meds with food is to avoid food aversions.

Leroy's not a fan of canned tuna for people but he does like canned salmon for people. I'll give it a try.
