I'm new to caring for cats, but find myself with a sick feral kitten. I've tnr'd her and most of the others in the colony. But know nothing about their health issues. Two days ago she was very active and playful. Yesterday and today she is listless and not feeling well. She threw up a tiny bit of yellow saliva with a blade if grass in it and just a while ago yellow Siva. She drank just a bit of water but certainly doesn't look well. Any advice for this little old lady to do for this beautiful tiny kitten.

is it possible to take her to the vet? let them get her temperature and check her hydration. Its not uncommon for illness to come on suddenly-they don't know they are sick until they are sick. its hard to say without an exam. vomiting could be a number of different things. could be a virus or blockage from eating foreign matter like string or qtips. some vets recommend holding off feeding for a few hours after vomiting but others say to try bland diet like plain boiled chicken or babyfood meat like chicken or turkey. just make sure no onions or garlic in it.

You don't say if she's and indoor or outdoor cat.  Are the TNR'd cats vaccinated when they are spayed/neutered?

This may be a thread for the strays and feral forum but maybe others will come with advice.  I think a vet trip is best if possible.

Welcome to the site and thank you VERY much for caring for feral cats. :hugs: :bigthumb:

A couple of questions. You say the kitten is four months old and that you have "TNRd" her so she recently had surgery then?? Was she kept confined for a few days after surgery? Can you touch her and are you able to pick her up? IF she is outdoors currently, is there anyway you can bring her indoors for a few days to monitor her?

The yellow vomit is bile (acid). Usually the yellow foamy vomit is from an empty stomach and if she is not feeling well then she may not be eating. She nibbled on some grass and that came up with the bile. I would definitely try to get her confined and to the vet is at all possible. Kittens can go downhill quickly and even more so for feral kittens who cannot be monitored closely outdoors especially right after a spay surgery. IF she did recently have surgery, I would contact your TNR vet and let them know about her condition.

Try offering her some canned kitten food - Fancy Feast makes a couple of pate style kitten options. Mix a small amount of warm water in with the canned food and see if you can get her to start eating. Another option is to try offering her some baby food from the store - the pure meat jars. If she won't eat anything or drink anything then she will need a vet asap. She MUST eat and very soon. I think the first thing would be to get her confined to keep a close eye on her, if at all possible and then contact the vet. Again, thank you SO much for trying to help these poor little feral kitties.

P.S. I am going to have your thread moved to our Feral cat forum. There your thread will be seen by many other member's who care for feral cats/kittens and they may have some more suggestions/advice for you as well.

She is a kitten of a feral, and is spayed with a rabies vaccination. She was outside with a shed for shelter with the others. But with the cold temps I brought her in last night in a cage, cause I have a dog, although she loves them, there not sure of her. It does sound like the vet is the thing to do. I'm new to using the forums , ill try to find the feral one. Thank you so much

This is very good news to hear that you already have her inside. Such a worry when they are so very young, recently spayed, and having to try to survive outdoors in the cold - SO wonderful that you brought her indoors. She sounds like a great candidate for an indoor home as well, IF you can find her one OR keep her yourself. ;)

Do keep us posted on how she is coming along. May be something as simple as a minor viral infection from all of the stress and surgery. A vet check is still in order if you don't see her improving today or if she will not eat. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

I really hate to show my ignorance about this, but when feeding feral cats, is it ok when feeding to let food in the feeding area that hadn't been eaten? And the same question for the kitten I've been nursinfvbacj to health, ok or not to kerb her unbeaten food in her dish with her in her crate? I gave lots to learn [emoji]128527[/emoji]

I would take up the food for the outside cats before night falls because it will attract other critters, like raccoons.

With the kitten in the crate, take up any wet food after an hour or so - it will just dry out sitting there.  Dry food can be left in the bowl.

And don't worry about learning - that's what we're here for!
