We found that my year old cat had a kitten yesterday morning around 6am. One she has had no other kittens or signs that she is in any distress however up until about 5 hours ago she was feeding cleaning and taking care of him but now she won't be bothered with him. She tries putting him in a cold spot in the house so we made her a bed with all she needs where no one will bother her. Like I said about 8am this morning she got out moved him back to the cold spot and left him there. He's barely moving not crying and barely opens his mouth. What do I do?? We had no idea she was expecting.

You need to warm this kitten up.  He cannot regulate his body temp until he is 3 weeks old.  You also need to get some KMR (Kitten Milk Replacer) available at any pet store or vet or even Walmart.  get the powder not the pre mixed You will need a bottle and a small needleless syringe in case it won't take the bottle.  The kitten needs to eat every hour or two around the clock for the first week or two.

when you feed the kitten Have the tummy down and the head up like it is laying by mom.

Get the stuff I'll add more instructions.,

Both the kitten and the food need to be warm or the kitten cannot digest the food.  Be careful you don't get any KMR into the kittens lungs, feed slowly.  You may need to start with the syringe.  Put a drop or two in the kittens check, wait for it to swallow, then breath and repeat.

To keep the kitten warm, you need a heat source i.e a heating pad, a hot water bottle or even a sock filled with raw rice (nuke for 5 minutes) Wrap the heat source in a towel or cloth so it doesn't burn the kitten and make sure the kitten has a space to move to if it gets too warm.

You will need a scale to weigh the kitten, grams or 1/10 of an ounce so you can see if the kitten is gaining weigh.  It will also help you figure out how much the kitten needs to eat.  It will need 8ml for each ounce of weight during a 24 hour period.  Assuming the kitten weighs about 3 ounces it will need 2 ml each hour or 4 ml every other hour.

You will also need to burp the kitten, lay the kitten over your palm, forearm or shoulder and gently pat the kittens back. Then you need to help the kitten pee and poop.  Begin by gently rubbing the belly and work downwards using a cloth or cotton ball.  gently tap above the anus.

it's possible the mother is not don giving birth but also likely it is a young mother and isn't sure what to do,  You can try to put the kitten back with the mom and see if she will catch on.  Sometimes it takes young mothers a day or two to catch on.

please ask any questions you have.

The advice above is excellent. It is also very important that you don't let the mother out until the kitten is weaned and she can be spayed, in about 8 weeks. She can bring parasites and infections back that could kill a weak kitten. She can also get pregnant again quickly.

Sorry to hear that. They really are so fragile, and there may have been something wrong with him that she could sense.

Still a good idea to have the supplies on hand in case she has more kittens. Please get her spayed if she isn't still pregnant.

I am sorry to hear that. It does sound as if this kitten was not right from the start, whixh is why the mother would not care for him. I shall now close this thread as we always do when a cat has passed.
