Animal Care Class for Homeschool Co-op

My friend and I will be in charge of a homeschool co-op class for the upcoming semester. It is a once a week class and is for 5-6 year olds.

I was leaning towards gathering food donations for a local animal rescue and perhaps doing some sort of field trip.

Can anyone recommend read out loud books on this age level that explain responsible pet guardianship, animal shelters, feral cats, etc.?

Any other ideas would be wonderful!

I think there is a book by Mr. Rogers.  I was looking up books on pet grief when my godson lost his dog.  I'll try to find it later.  I know there was one on grief but I think there was also one on pet care.
