I guess the cat was a threat to public safety ?  What a worthless POS human being.  My biggest fear is one of my cats getting out and something like this happening. Sort of proves my lack of faith in human nature and how cats are treated. Lower than vermin.

I have to think they could start with illegal discharge of a firearm with him and go from there.

Pretty sad and disgusting. This is one reason why my cats wear collars and tags at all times. I wonder if that police officer thinks that shooting loose dogs is preferable to catching them and scanning them for a microchip and then holding them for the number of days required by LAW?

At any rate, any officer that is that trigger happy should not be a police officer.

Well I signed the petition. And I'm pretty picky about what I sign. I'd advise the cats owners to go straight for the throat if possible and find out if they can sue their police dept. Even if the cat had escaped it was not a threat to the public. I also see little likelihood of the OFFICER shooting a dog if it was wounded. It would have had a gofundme for vet bills before the day was over and 10,000 people wanting to give it a forever home.  The cat hissed so he shot it.

I got this petition in my email today. This is sickening. You have to wonder how many other animals he's killed. He needs to be fired and brought up on charges

This is pathetic. Of what possible harm could that cat have done to that cop? Absolutely bring him up on charges. Had this been any other one of us, you can bet we'd be getting charged. I hate it when the law takes itself into its own  hands, deliberately does what it's not supposed to do, then tries to justify it by saying "Oh, it was a matter of public safety." What a load of bull. Time for him to realize that he is no better that the rest of us. Absolutely hold him accountable.

Signed!! I am absolutely disgusted with the cop if what is presented is true. If so, I hope the FBI outs this cop as an animal abuser. Did the cats owner only call the police because the cat was on a neighbors property and he didn't want to be accused of trespassing? I've had cats sneak out, but never called the cops. Has this story made the news yet? I'm beyond horrified!! An 8 pound cat?? God forbid that cop face real danger. Wussy!! Just signed it now. Wow, what a macho cop that dude is. Scared of a 8-pound cat. The infuriates me beyond palapble measure. Justice for Sugar absolutely,

And yet my local AC officer has refused to pick up the dogs that run loose next door , I had to pepper spray the one three times.  They stand in the middle of traffic, bark all night.  But a cop sees fit to shoot a cat that is doing nothing but sitting in someone's yard and had the miasma to hiss at him.  If Sugar had been a dog and he shot it would have broke the internet.

All too true, I'm afraid. There seems to be that stigma among non-cat lovers that our feline friends are less significant or not as worthwhile as dogs, and we all know that not to be true. Dogs, certainly, are important, but so are cats. With all of the outcry about what this officer has done (and as I have learned, it;s not just on here or or the petition drive, but on several places on the web), perhaps the rest of the world will come to see that cats have worth, have value, have their place in our worldwide community. Our feline friends deserve no less than this,

Signed it.  Nitwit has no business with a gun.  It'll be someone's child next.  Poor Sugar.  She was no threat to anyone.  This guy needs to be in jail.  HEY FBI...DID YOU SEE THAT ONE???

It was a couple decades ago, but I had a friend who lost a dog because Animal Control lured him out of his fenced back yard, on a holiday weekend, and the "shelter" put the dog down before his humans could get in to rescue him from them.  Except for taking in animals, they were closed for the holiday, but perfectly willing to count the long weekend in their countdown to killing the animals.  That one never even made the news, let alone online petitions, but I've been very careful ever since never to donate money to that particular branch of the ASPCA.

Stuff like this is why cats need bulletproof vests and concealed carry permits, in addition to a collar with ID tag, a microchip and an identification tattoo. Oh and a tattoo that says, "If you kill me, my mom (or dad) will sue you into foreclosure and bankruptcy."

Let's throw in an armed body guard, too.

It's very sad but I think that what happened to @Margret' s friend happens a lot more than we realize. I know people who have had dogs in fenced yards taken away by AC because they were a "threat"

Signed. That's why my cat wears collar, id tag, license, and rabies tag at all times. always on a leash or in stroller when outside my apartment and watch him like a hawk. a cop here once shot a PUPPY  because he didn't know if the dog had rabies or not. And the dog was chipped.

take guns away from police.

Apparently the words "10 day quarantine" meant nothing to that cop? Seriously, where did they get their criminal justice degrees from if they missed the rabies quarantine protocol?

A badge or the letters DVM seem to give special privilege to someone to dispose of or injure a pet and walk away without criminal prosecution.

Signed, though I had some trouble finding the petition without having to log in (strange policy).  Let's be fair.  We don't know yet that the cop involved will get off scotch free.  For that matter, even though the DVM we're all thinking about escaped without criminal charges, we don't know that she'll retain her license.  I think it's unlikely.  I hope I'm right.

I doubt the cop who did this will retain his job. Stop and think why pet owners have taken to petitions to drive the point across. We aren't going to take it anymore. I don't want to take weapons away from law enforcement. I want to advance sane laws that protect our pets and give them reasonable rights and value under the law. Professionals that injure or kill through intent or negligence need to be held up for inspection under the law and the owners of those pets need to have reasonable recourse at the very least a civil court. I intend for my fight to far beyond my personal hell.

This cop shot a freaking housecat. A common domestic cat. I have said for years. Animal abusers need to be registered just like sex offenders. Seems the same software would work with a few tweaks. What we don't want is this cop fired only to see he's the AC officer in another state.
