Hello,

I am new here and also to having cats.  My wife and I have 20 years of dog experience under our belts and can diagnose almost anything with our pooches, but cats are a brand new thing for us both so reaching out for some help.  We adopted three kittens last fall, two of them from the same local rescue organization (not a shelter).  The kittens are all roughly the same age, about 4 months old right now, all have been to the vet multiple times for shots, checkups, etc. and all have gotten a clean bill of health.

However, the one male of the group, Harry, has always had some stinky gas since we adopted him.  He smells worse than my 80 pound lab-mix.  He was born indoors, and does not have worms (has been tested at least three times), but has been dewormed three times in his life "just in case".  Recently, Harry started leaving behind runny poop if he sneezed or if he wanted to get away while holding him.  He's always had very soft stools.  However, last week he started pooping exclusively outside the litter box.  We have a room for the kittens to stay in when we're not at home, and he poops all over it.  Mostly "cow patty" type poop, but occasionally very runny, mucus-filled goop.  When he's running around the house, we have to keep an eye on him as he will poop just about anywhere, under the couch or right in the middle of the floor in front of us.  He uses the litterbox for pee every single time, but absolutely will not poop in it.

Harry is on a mix of Wellness CORE Grain-Free Kitten food and Fromm cat food (what he was on at the rescue organization).  All have had a little wet food mixed in, but whether he has the wet food or not the problem remains.  Harry eats very well, drinks very well, plays non-stop and is not lethargic.  He has never vomited.  All of those things seem to rule out a number of conditions.  He has no other issues except for pooping diarrhea/cow patties outside the litterbox non-stop and the stinky gas.  He has been to the vet twice for this and they can't find anything wrong.  The vet gave us another dose of Pancur and he is also now on Albon (just started) to see if that will help.

I'm kind of at a loss, and I'm truly shocked at how much a 3-pound kitten can poop.

Any thoughts on what we can try that might help?

Thanks!

Chris

Has he been tested for other parasites or bacteria. Another thing could be an allergy to the food. It could just one ingredient that is bothering him.

Just a standard stool test, which was negative.  What other kinds of parasites and/or bacteria should we ask them to run tests for?  Harry is growing and gaining weight normally (doubled in weight since we adopted him a little over a month ago) so the vet isn't too concerned health-wise, but it's frustrating having to clean up so much stinky kitten poop constantly.

As for the food, it's possible though will be hard to pin down.  He's been on the Fromm food since he was able to eat regular food, and when he came to live with us we started him on the mix of Wellness and Fromm.  Nothing has changed in that regard, but maybe we'll try to switch to one or the other for a few days and see what happens (most likely the Wellness since it's made for kittens and the Fromm he's been on from the rescue was the adult cat kind, hence the reason we mix in the Wellness Kitten).  All the cats seemed to be doing well on the mix so haven't changed anything.

Some suggestions:
1. Try giving him a couple of teaspoons of pure canned pumpkin everyday.
2. Try some cat probiotics
3. Maybe hes allergic to a certain protein. Chicken is the common culprit. Try feeding him something woth a single source of novel protein. Something limited ingredient. Maybe rabbit, venison or turkey only?
4. Did he get tested for Giardia? Bordatella?
5. The last stop is raw food. My cat's chronic diarrhea was never cured by medicine. I feed him primal raw frozen nuggets and he has no more cow patty poop and diarrhea.

I would definitely have the Real PCR diarrhea panel run on him to test for other parasites not seen in the regular fecal float test.  Also, at 4 months, he might not be able to tolerate such rich food.  I'm thinking that the Wellness is probably the culprit.  I've had 3 kittens in the past 10 years and none of them did well on Wellness as kittens, not even on the kitten formula.  That caused terrible smelly, loose poops.  My personal favorite for young kittens is Royal Canin canned kitten food and the dry isn't bad either.  For our 2 youngest, we mixed the RC kitten with an adult grain free (more kitten than adult food) and this worked well until they were around 10 mos old, then we transitioned to more adult food.

I was just about to post the same as above, it's common for fecal floats to come up negative, unless the parasite is shedding cysts at the time of the sample taken, they will hide and not be seen.

When this happens, it's wise to repeat the float 3 days in a row.

Or get a PCR test ran. This is sent to a lab, and is very sensitive vs the float.

More costly though, somewhere in the range of $200. vs the float at maybe $45.

Coccidia is what this sounds like to me, the mucus is a clue, the smell, and is common in kittens who's mom was outdoors.

Simple coccidia is easy to cure, but albon will take time, as it only inhibits growth of cysts where-as ponazuril will kill these cysts, and is only 1 dose a day for 3-5 days, with almost immediate improvement.

I also second the royal canin, dry is babycat, excellent food for kittens, the canned is good too, but fancy feast kitten is fine too.
