Tought. I do feel with you.  At least it went quickly, I think.

Re her daugter, I wonder if its possible for her to come closer to you instead?    Is having her inside an option for you?  If so, please have your eyes open for it.

Let the death of the mom lead to something really good.  A sort of holy sacrifice.

^Hugs!*

I would say show her.  After Gracie died, I put her near the other kitties who were under my bed for them to view her before I took her to be cremated.  I also showed Garfy to his brother Sammy just so he'd know.  I think it helped them.  They must be tougher than we think.

Pardon me for forgetting.  I'm so sorry for your loss.  I understand sort of,  because I lost several of my ferals years ago when the neighbors called animal control.  I found out later they were trapped and killed. :(

ok guys, what a HARD HARD day. I had to work too, it sucked. After work about 11pm I went to the spot to see her/feed her. She was there in her shelter - it was so cold here about zero f. I brought her a cat teddy bear that looked actually a lot like her mom and put it in there - the cat shelter earlier in the day.

A friend said it will help her to have something there to snuggle by? :( Anyway before feeding her dry and wet food and giving her warm water in her stainless steel bowl, i got in the trunk, in the bag and pulled out mama :( I laid her on the ground by the feeding station, still in the bag a bit but uncovered so she could see and smell her. She was pretty frozen, so cold here. Hoping to bury her asap in a couple days- grounds way too hard atm.

She was just slowly walking up- shes very skittish so she ran into the shallow ditch/bushes and came out right away, slowly smelling/looking at her. She stayed away a couple feet for a bit then i moved away in the car about ten feet away. She came closer for a minute or two- i pulled close up again and she just sat there kinda sad and confused looking at me for a good two min. I tried not to cry but i cried a lot and kept saying mamas gone, she loves you she got hit by a car etc. I TOLD HER I LOVED HER AND WILL BE THERE EVERY DAY TO FEED HER SEE HER TALK TO HER, LOVE HER. I doubt she understood but she was paying attention i think. Soon after i took mom back into my trunk and fed her. She actually ate a tad right away wet canned food then slowly walked back into her shelter with straw and her new cat teddy bear.

I'm so so sad and upset. I hope i did the right thing. I miss mama cat so much. I was in shock seeing her lie on the side of the road sat night after work. I named her daughter Pretty and asap im getting her fixed and my tnr group here will try to get her a foster home. I do not want to see her get hit too crossing the busy road into the field to catch mice or whatever. I saw both several times w/ mice come over to me at the parking lot near the bush/ditch where i fed them. Its busy there. I have too many cats now and feed almost 40-50 daily at several colony locations in my city.

I just miss her so much and hurt for both me and Pretty as they were SO SO CLOSE.: Kevin. OPINIONS and prayers welcome.

That was a splendid idea with that furry companion toy.

Having that many cats, its thus no option for you to take her inside as your indoor kitty, I presume...  Pity, now is the opening available.

Still, as you hope to find her a foster home, work on her anyways.  It will make it easier for your successor in that foster home.

Prayers you can find a home for the daughter and fast. Funny how some ferals can affect you more than others.

I fell in love with a feral (related to my current cat I think) in 2012 that disappeared. Saw a hindquarter to a cat on the road one after noon. Nothing else left. Was the sweetest feral. I'm pretty sure it was the one little girl I fell in love with. So, When I could save the next, I did.

I'm so sorry for the pain.  When you take on a feral group, it's a huge responsibility.  It always leaves you to worry for their whereabouts until you see and feed them again.  It's a pleasure to see them eat.  It's a pain to see them go, god only knows where during the day and night.  I can't let a starving creature not eat.  It's in my nature I guess (along with that rather large S on my forehead.)  At one point I was feeding 11 cats, 12 if you include the rarely seen daddy cat of my current kitties.  He was a gorgeous big yellow Maine Coon.  When my neighbors called Animal Control (I even hate that name) without my knowledge they started disappearing.  I then took in 6 feral cats to live with my dear little old fart of a kitty named Sammy - a purebred persian who wanted nothing to do with them.  They respected him.  The other 6 I assume were either caught by AC (the records only showed 3 of them were caught) or killed in other ways.  Nature is cruel.  Human beings can be just as cruel.

My opinion is don't feed more than you can take in your house, because housing them in order to save their lives might become necessary at some point as it was with me.  Since you already have such a large group, I do hope you have others helping you. If not you could recruit some help.  One person just can't do it all.  I only know of one person who lives in Windsor, but haven't spoken to her in years.  But do be careful, as I'm sure you are already aware, of who you tell.  Not everyone wants to help our fellow creatures even though they may say otherwise.  If I can think of any other ideas that might help, I will let you know.

I'm so sorry Keven.

I feel you pain and I am not sure I can say anything to console you.  Giving her daughter the toy to snuggle with seems like a great idea, and happy you did that for her.  I've lost two of my ferals.  I didn't find them dead, but they have been missing for a while.  It was extremely painful. I was really depressed about it, and cried many tears.

Keep you head up, this cat is lucky to have met you and was able to have a comfortable good quality of life before she left.  I'm sure she is in kitty heaven now, and happy as can be.  Her daughter will be ok with time, and with you taking care of her, she will also have a nice good quality of life.  Sending prayers your way.

My thoughts are with you and your feral. I live in fear that  my two ferals will get hit because even though they mostly live on my porch and backyard they do still cross the streets. Here's hoping Spring comes early this year

I'm so sorry for your loss - it's so hard losing one that you've loved & cared for. It sounds like you made sure she never knew hunger, and that she so enjoyed her time with her dear daughter. Take comfort in the fact that you made her life SO much better while she was here--and I'm sure she knew she was loved. And that she could always take comfort in knowing you'd always be there for Pretty.

The stuffed toy was brilliant! I'm sure Pretty's taking solace in your care and love too. Definitely work to get her into a foster home (sounds like you're already headed down this so-sweet & caring Path).

I'll check out your other thread tomorrow - but wanted to let you know you prob should Talk to the TNR group ASAP. know the main TNR clinic in my town isn't open for spaying/neutering during these coldest of months bc it's dangerous to release kitties with shaved bellies, etc. They will, however do it if they know you can provide a foster home for the kitty to recuperate till the fur grows back at the surgical site. So you may be able to still get Pretty fixed shortly - but it may be a bit more involved, so I'd highly recommend talking to the TNR clinic to start getting your ducks in a row for Pretty. Fixing her & getting her fostered & socialized is best thing you can do for her - which you know already :) And I have a feeling her Momma's somewhere purring, knowing you're taking such good care of her baby!

This comes with my sincere sympathy.  My feral cat Perry went missing for two days.  I called every Humane Society and Animal Control in my area. I was heart broken and couldn't stop crying.  I was so relieved when he came home.  My worst nightmare is that he gets hurt somehow through the day.  Just remember that you helped make her life a little easier and I'm sure she knows that you will continue to love and take care of her daughter.

It could go either way. I actually did that with one cat and they took off after I showed the body to them.

I'm so sorry Kevin, looking after Ferals is so hard because they're not domesticated and there's no real control but your feelings for them are the same as if they were tame cats living with you. Here in the UK we can buy heat pads, they heat up when the cat sits on them, it might be an idea as she won't be getting the warmth from her mother now. The furry toy is a brilliant idea though. My heart goes out to you and Pretty X
