I wonder if anyone has ever done a study on what the breed, and all those different breeds mixed in one cat, might have to do with the smell? It is like mixing perfume! My beautiful Burt has a two layered soft as bunny fur coat, a round, slightly smashed in face and beautiful big round eyes, and he smells delicious!  Like a rain washed early morning. I could smell him for hours every day, and as a matter of fact do as often as I can. Then there is Casper, narrow long face, coarse short hair, blue eyes, and an odor that I have always associated with the Siamese breed, a 'musk' that no one in their right mind would want to imbibe in. AND a personality to match, brash, bold, and always demanding attention to his every need. I was checking him for fleas the other day, touched his stomach, and he was not in the mood to be examined. He latched on and wouldn't let go, bunny kicking with glee, and I was dragging him around the floor saying "OW,OW, PLEASE LET GO!" I shudder to think of sticking my face down there!

We should have the breeders come on and describe what their breed of cat smells like, I wonder if each breed has it's own distinctive smell? I think we have something here, after all it doesn't just include cats, EVERYONE knows what a Basset Hound smells like, ( if not, go out and sniff one!
) breeds of dogs smell different too! Now don't get me wrong, there is nothing cuter then a Basset Hound puppy, and I have shared my home with one or two in my life, but they have a distinct odor that I can pick out in a crowd!

:D nothing like sticking your face in a big fluffy cat belleh and breathing in. Even though I am allergic to cats! I love the way my Pushy smells, but it's not an odour that conjures up anything in particular to me, he just smells clean and warm. With a distinct Pushy smell. Wiggies doesn't really smell at all, although his tummy is still good for snorgling.

Hilarious post, dude. I love the image of a group of adults, passing around a cat and taking deep sniffs.

I can't say I huff my cat, but when he "grooms" me I'm always impressed by the absence of smell, in other words how clean he keeps himself. Unfortunately, his bowel movements are horrific: I can clean the litter box twice a day, and still it looks like the aftermath of the Afghan war every time I lift the lid -- poop jutting out from the litter at odd angles, like bombed-out battle tanks half-buried under the desert sand; mountainous urine clumps that look like the Great Pyramids before British archaeologists spent decades unearthing them; litter shoveled against the sides of the box, like wind-swept sand dunes; more particulate matter hanging in the air than the Arabian desert after a dust storm.

So I went and bought Fresh Step litter, and now Bud smells like fresh laundry, which isn't good. I figure if I can smell it, to him it must be a hundred times more potent, and I don't want to make my little Buddy uncomfortable or sick from overly perfumed litter. I have to find a happy medium...
That has to be the most hilarious, yet so true description of a litter box ever written. You, my friend, should be an author!

OMG it's like a comedy writing competition!!!:clap::clap::clap::clap::lol3::nod::surf:

My RB tortie Tootsie smelled sooo good. Sweet!!! I used to love to huff her. She just smelled fresh. All the time.

My current cat smells...like a cat? He's got a weepy eye right now, and I noticed an odd smell. It's iff putting to be honest. And to be honest, it could be my own sinuses, in which case anything remotely smelly turns my stomach. For this reason though, I think everyone should sniff their cat on a regular basis. All I know is, when Robin sees the vet? I'm going to demand they sniff his head region--I really want to know if this is in my imagination, or what!

PS I'm so lucky he doesn't turn his litterbox into a scene from Dune. :lol3::nod::lol3:

Litter boxes with giant man eating sand worms! That would certainly discourage one from keeping up with scooping!

Learning I am not alone in huffing my cats has been a profound moment for me. Before I was ashamed, but now I can huff openly and joyfully!

I am not so much of a huffer as I am a "Cat pillow-seeking" human...I one to use Artie as a pillow!!

Artie just smells like Artie... no scent at all; unless he has a cling-on!!

I love to cuddle up to him, when he is on my bed and use his body as a pillow!! I get fur in my face: lips, nose tickles, but I love it... Artie will take this for so long, and then he has had enough! I love to feel his purr up against my ear and face....

Oh, I'm a serious cat huffer.  Hekitty's belleh smells just like a cotton sheet washed in castile soap and sun-dried on a sunny April morning...wind and sun and wild sweet scents all mixed up together.  As good as it is, it is nothing compared to the fur just behind her ear! OMG!  If I could bottle this scent, I'd make a fortune!  I can't even begin to describe it, it's everything comforting and warm and homey.  Excuse me...I need to go huff a cat...

You all are hilarious. I haven't laughed so much in a long time. I'm a cat huffer, too. Mingo has fur soft as a powder puff, and I love to bury my face in his fur, but he smells like . . . cat.

My sister is going through that right now with two of her boys. One has been a long-time sprayer and we think the other one started doing it, simply because of the first one spraying. Both boys have been to vet and they're fine. So whatever is going on, it's something between the two of them. Anyway, she called me the other night. I said, "Hello" and she said, "Come over and smell my house!"
I know it's not funny; we lived through Hydrox's spraying when he was alive, but just the way she said that made me smile.

As for the huffing, guilty. I used to love to stick my head in Banshee's belly and just breathe. Honestly, she smelled so good. And I can't tell you how many times I'd awaken in the middle of the night with my nose in her belly and her paws wrapped around my head. Molli smells good, too, but she won't let me sniff her belly....she always gets the "What the heck are you doing to me?" look when I try.
Only another pet owner would get it! I think it's perfectly reasonable to ask people to come over and smell your house. If you can't ask your best friends and family to do that, who can you ask?

I guess I'm pretty lucky with the spraying, they've only been doing it for the past month or so. I think Gin, who used to be the alpha, has retired. Little Boy, who used to be his side kick, has decided it's too much for him to take on so the other black and white boys are battling for supremacy.

Have you all seen this thread? They've managed to bottle that cat smell and now it's for sale!

I also like to bury my face in a cat's belly or side while they're lying down and sniff...it's really comforting. My old cat smelled like fresh, crisp pillows. Felix...doesn't really smell much like anything. He kind of has a faint earthy smell, I guess.

Yup, you can't underestimate the plushy-ness. My kitteh's fur is a lot more soft and velvety than my brother's chihuahua.

You bet. Mingo is like a powder puff. I can hardly keep my hands off him. He takes a dim view of that. He'd like a little more dignity, thank you.

Yay!

Fellow Cat Huffers . . .  UNITE!

I'm a huffer and proud of it!

(Just be sure to wipe the fur off your face afterwards.  It's a dead giveaway.  My partner will see it and start yelling, "Are you sniffin' the cat again???)
