For the last few weeks, when I leave for work in the morning, I always put a gate up at the top of the steps. That way, The Beast isn't right there at the front door, ready to attack us when we first come home. Every once in a while, I'll come home and Rick will say that I didn't put the gate up. And I always do. I know I do. One day, I almost fell down the steps backward, trying to put the gate into place with my hands loaded with stuff. That day I really knew I had put the gate up....got home and Rick said, "You forgot to put the gate up again." Well, no I didn't; I know I didn't forget.
Today I came home and The Beast met me at the front door. The gate was not up at the top of the steps; it was over by the piano. Now I KNOW I put that blasted gate up this morning. But what was really weird is that the top of Jackie's food can was removed and it was laying over by the rocking chair. I stopped dead when I saw that. And obviously, the kids had been eating food because nobody was particularly hungry for lunch. That top is not easy to get off; it sticks and we have trouble with it sometimes. Rick said that maybe Jackie got it off, but I don't think so. And even if she did, no way could she have moved the lid that far away.
We've been teasing my sister about Mom coming back (she's been dead now for over 3 years). But they have one of her table lights in the living room and, quite often, when they come home from being out somewhere, that light will be turned on. They don't know how or why, but the light will be on. And my sister's putting in a downstairs bathroom in the house, which is something Mom had often talked about her doing because it was such a hassle for Mom to get up all those steps to the second-floor bathroom. First thing Rick said when my sister told us about the bathroom on the first floor was, "Boy, your mom's really gonna be peeved! All those years she wanted you to put a bathroom in and now that she's gone, you do it! If she's not here yet, she's coming!" And we all laughed and that was that.
Well, I said to Rick today at lunch that I wonder if his father came back to see how we were treating Jackie. And maybe he didn't think she was getting enough to eat, so he took the lid off the can, so she could help herself to extra food. Yes, I know....that's just crazy and I don't really believe it. Not one bit.
But still....something funky is going on in this house. I'm going to start taking pictures of that blasted gate in the morning!
