What is the normal prep the day before neuter surgery (ouch).  I have a 2:30 PM appointment to see a local private vet to have my male kitty neutered, but wasn't giving any specific instructions about when to stop feeding food.   If I stop feeding at 12 midnight, it will be 14.5 hours that the kitty will be without food, water only.  I forgot to ask the vet about specific instructions and will be doing a callback to get those instructions. Seeking feedback from the online members with their experience.  Look forward to hearing from you.

For boys it's a really easy procedure.  Even so, they do have to go under so be sure to stop all food and water around midnight the night before.

Good luck to you and your mister!

It's supposed to be 8 hours with no food. . .so if you're up at 6:30 you could give him some food! But not after that. Take the water away 2 hours before. It's only so they don't throw up under anesthetic and inhale the vomit. As for the actual procedure, it's very easy for males. Just a quick snip ;). So once he doesn't feel woozy from the anesthetic anymore, he should be fine.

How old is your boy? If they are relatively young, they may say give them a teaspoon of food a couple hours before (I found that odd but apparently it has something to do with their being so young). My boys were 13 weeks when they were neutered, so food after midnight except for the teaspoon of food at 6am. They had an 8:30am appt.

I should note, you should check with your vet to validate if they should get that or not. You don't want to just give your cat food a few hours before only to have the vet turn you away when you tell them. This is specifically for young kittens (I've seen varying ages mentioned, but most say under 4 months).

Thanks  for the feedback everyone.  I just cancelled my appointment with this vet

and will make another appointment with a local vet that I'm a bit more

comfortable and let them give me special instructions regarding food,

water, etc.  This kitty is not a baby kitty, but still a kitten maybe six to

nine months.  Hope to have this done next Friday.  Will keep you updated.

I didn't realize you were uncomfortable with that vet! I was surprised they were doing the surgery so late in the day, I'll admit. 6-9 months probably won't be needing the teaspoon of food.

A bit surprised myself.  Gut feeling that this vet was not the right

place to take a kitty.  Made an appointment for next Friday.

My conversation with the new vet hospital, they need to see

the kitty first before doing any neuter surgery.  My young Brucie

will have his first visit for a physical to include parasite stool

testing, vaccinations, microchip and anything else that is required.

Timing is good, have a good insurance that covers accidents,

illnesses, wellness.  We're all good to Rock 'N' Roll next Friday.

Brucie and Tuxedo are a match made in heaven for companionship by two males, one neutered

and Brucie still has his charms to show off until we get the okay from the vet to go forward with

the neutered surgery.  Big Brother (Tuxedo) Little Brother Brucie

Yay! Glad it's all ready to go once you get that exam. I just recently got insurance myself (ie, yesterday), also comprehensive for my younger ones. They are already neutered/spayed though so even though that's covered... not anymore!
