Our cat came home with an injured back leg a few days ago.  After a visit to the vet and xrays, we were told that he most likely got hit by a car and has broken his femur in about 6 places and displaced his kneecap :(  I am so devastated. To repair this with surgery is expected to cost a minimum of $4000, and the other option is amputation which would cost around $1500 but I'm finding it so hard to deal with that emotionally. Even though I know cats do adjust to only having 3 limbs, it's too upsetting for me to even think about. I'm still trying to get other opinions/quotes but I'm now being bullied into making an immediate decision by the first vet! They said if I don't make a decision soon and let them know, they'll be forced to call the humane society!! I know that cats hide their pain well but he is showing no signs at all of pain and is very happy, purring, eating normally etc.

Regardless of which option we choose to take, there is no way we can afford to do either one. I have been unemployed for a long time and struggling to find work so even a payment plan would be difficult.

I have set up a campaign to help raise money....please help out if you can, it would be so very much appreciated.

I'll be honest, just based on everything I've heard about all the problems that can still happen after a surgery, amputation seems like the kindest choice to make. Yes, they can adapt, but also they don't seem to have the emotional attachment (for lack of a better term) to their limbs that we do. They don't care what anyone thinks if they're missing a limb, nor do they feel they are handicapped. They are just themselves, nothing more, nothing less.

I agree with the advice above.  Also, please know that he is likely in a LOT of pain.  Cats purr to comfort themselves when they're in pain, and I agreeing that doing something asap is better than nothing in this case.
