Hi friends,

My fur babies and I just got notice that our building will be fumigated with Vikane gas for termites next week.  I'm trying to get the apartment in order - bagging, etc, finding a hotel, fun fun.

I wanted to know if any of you had experience/opinions on care for post-fumigation.  All the literature I have read says no residue is left, so I shouldn't need to clean/wash anything upon our return.  That said, all the literature is posted by pest control companies, and I don't trust them to have my cats' best interests at heart.  We have carpets, and I am on a very very tight budget - this was totally unexpected and caught me off guard, financially.

I can try and find an RV to stay in for the four days with my kitties, so I can save some of my "relocation fund" for a professional cleaner to come through after the fumigation, but I'd rather not if it isn't necessary.

Fellow cat lovers, do you have any thoughts or wisdom to share?

Thanks!

The first thing I'd do is call my vet and ask their opinion on it. I've never had a house fumigated, so I'm afraid I can't offer any other help.

This may sound a little odd, but I would go to bedbugger.com, go to the forums, open an account, and ask for a pro's (exterminator's) advice on this, but be upfront about the termites (which I hope is the truth).
The reason I suggest that site is because Vikane is used to treat houses for bedbugs, too, and the site has at least 4 nationally-recognized experts (a couple are professional entomologists) who answer questions every day. From what I remember if the Vikane questions, no there is no residual (it's a gas); however, it's worth asking if they will be laying down any chemicals as backup to the Vikane, which is sometimes done for bedbugs. You might also try messaging (instead of asking a question) one of these two who are in the forums : Paul Bello, and Lou Sorkin. Paul can be crabby, but he knows his stuff, as does Lou. They've both been on national tv; it's fantastic how they volunteer on that site, and like I said they occasionally assist with non bed bug questions too.

Whatever you do, don't come back until you get the all-clear. I see no reason to not trust the exterminators, as they are required by law to tell you the truth, and Vikane is a "top shelf" item. Vikane kills 100% of all living things. At least you won't have to worry about fleas or spiders for awhile!

Why are you "bagging up"?
