I was just told my fat boy cat has diabetes and an infection.

This is all new to me.

Any advice on handling a cat with diabetes?
Also need help getting my cat to eat.

(This was posted by my son, I've never been on any online forums before so please be patient)

Have your son help you join and then post on the FelineDiabetes.com message board You'll get a lot of help from experienced diabetic cat owners there than you can from here, although you are still welcome to post about your cat in the other sections of the TCS forums

Getting your diabetic cat to eat is important. You don't want your cat to develop ketoacidosis and / or fatty liver disease, serious conditions that need immediate vet treatment. Your cat needs to have food in the tummy before you can give insulin. The right food to feed is low carb canned food, not the prescription stuff the vet may push you to buy. There are many suitable commercial brands of foods to feed: Nature's Variety Instinct, Fancy Feast Classic / Gourmet, etc. Here's a a list of the low carb Fancy Feast: http://www.felinediabetes.com/glutenfree.htm Fancy Feast is inexpensive and widely available so start with that for now and then later change the brand if you wish.

hi and welcome to TCS!

@LTS3 gave you great advice!

i'm so sorry your boy was diagnosed with diabetes, and an infection. having had my boy diagnosed years ago with diabetes, as well as my girl having had chronic kidney disease, i understand how overwhelming it can feel for a while...how there's so much to learn about in caring for our cat with a newly diagnosed medical condition. from my experience, once we learn about the new medical needs and some time passes while we're handling those new needs, things do start to settle down into a new 'normal' routine for us as well as for our cat.

it's also very important for you to take care of yourself! make sure you take care of yourself, eating/sleeping/relaxation time/activities, so you'll be better able to care for your boy -- and so you don't 'burn yourself out' physically or emotionally.  and we'll be here for you in any ways we're able to be, as well as for support.
