My 7 year old tabby boy had lost 2 lbs over past 2 months. He is acting perfectly normal eating, drinking, voiding and playing normally. The vet check was all good labs and stool smear normal. Since he actually needed to lose weight he is still over 12 lbs the vet is not concerned. But what could csuse him ti spontaneously loss 2 lbs? Anyone have a similar experience with a kitty? We did move could it be stress??

Hi,

Is he on the same food or have there been a recent change of food possibly with fewer calories? Have you watched him as he's eating? Is he eating the same amount? Have you had his teeth checked?

My cats get tired of the same food sometimes and unless I give them something else they like, they won't eat. I have two others and one was bullying the other for her food. She was losing weight and I had to seperate them so she could eat.

Moving can be very stressful on cats, so I think this is definitely a possibility, BUT, if he was eating the same amount and same food as always, then he shouldn't have lost any weight.

Do you free feed him, which makes it hard to know just how much he was eating, or feed canned food, so you can tell how much he was eating?  OR, do you have other cats who might have eaten his portions?  All of these things need to be taken into consideration when determining whether or not he actually has been intaking his normal amount of food or not.

I am able to tell how much he eats since he is only cat and i feed him canned food. I have been thinking that with the move and getting settled I havent bedm giving him a lot of treats so maybe that has something to do with weight loss? Anyway I have upped his portions from 3oz to 6oz cans (he also gets crunchies at will) do we will see

Crunchies at will?  Does this mean you were leaving out dry food, and then feeding him one 3 oz can of food per day?

If so, could it be that he wasn't eating as much dry food as normal?  Or am I misinterpreting this.  I can't believe just missing a few treats would equate to 2 pounds in 2 months!.

Didn't you say he needs to lose weight anyway.  Are you trying to put that weight back on?  Did your Vet tell you a good amount of calories per day for him to be eating?  What SHOULD he weigh?  Did your Vet say?

He weights 12.3 oz down from 14. He is a large cat (possible some mainecoon in his mix), so he wasnt completely fat. That said, the vet thinks his current weight is good. His advise was to watch his weight and bring him back if he continues to lose. I am giving him extra food on my own to see if he CAN gain weight because I am worried there is something wrong that didnt show up on blood tests. Maybe thats wrong?

No, I don't think there's anything wrong with what you are dong.  I was just curious, since you mentioned he could stand to lose the weight anyway.

Do you have a baby scale so you can keep track?  Feeding him twice as much as usual, he can easily gain pretty quickly, which might get out of hand

I don't have a baby scale so I weighed myself alone then holding him and did the math. He hasn't lost or gained which is good. I know my bathroom scale is accurate but not to the ounce (and in a cat ounces count !)so I might buy a baby scale . At any rate, I won't let him get obese. Thanks for your imput[emoji]128570[/emoji]

If you keep feeding him more and he keeps losing weight then he could have hyperthyroidism. Just something to keep in mind.
