Hi Peoples!

I'm looking for some advice.

Currently, I'm the only one here, which means that I'm looking after the dog and the cat.

The dog--he's such a sweetie. He's a big, almost 9 year-old lab (his birthday is in a few weeks). He just wants to love everyone.

The cat--little... #*&*&^$#@... I love her. She's my little snuggle-bug. But she's not so nice to others. She didn't pass the plays well with others test.

The cat and the dog were passing each other like ships in the night. But, when it's just me in the house, the green-eyed monster starts rearing his ugly head in the mind of the cat. She gets so mad!!

Lately, she hasn't been ignoring him. She's been charging him and screeching at him with a couple of whaps of the paw.

Honestly, I don't know what to do. He's so sweet. He doesn't do a thing, but looks like, Hey? Why don't you like me? I'd totally play with you and snuggle with you...

He's currently wearing The Cone of Shame (he cut himself last week, and we had to take him to the vet--but since I don't think he's really ever hurt himself, it was traumatic).

I just want the cat to be happy. i would feed her close to him, but he's a pig, and would snatch her food--and that would be a bigger disaster. I don't want to yell at her, as I think that makes her associate him with me yelling at her, but I'm kind of at a loss.

The jealousy thing--she only does this when I'm standing there. Otherwise, they seem to ignore one another.

Yay!

Thanks :)

I have one TORTIE who is like that.  I don't have dogs but do have many other cats (being in rescue) and she is mostly fine with them UNLESS she has managed to get close to me and is getting personall petting and attention.  Then she will charge any other cat who comes near.  I've taken to putting her up on something high (like the dryer) when having a love session with her as it keeps the other cats away.

I'm not sure if your situation is the same, but it could be that you need to keep the dog slightly away from you when she is around, or isolate them in different rooms.  It sounds like she cannot really hurt the dog as long as you keep her claws clipped at least weekly.  You might also correct her behavior with a loud NO when she attacks the dog.  My tortie knows the NO word and will cease pursuing the other cat, but I do try to keep the peace by loving her in a separate area reserved just for her and not petting or fussing over any of the other cats in front of her.  She was a medical rescue and needs to be kept calm and happy so I do go out of my way to keep her from feeling jealousy.  So far, so good.

Oh--I keep them apart as much as I can. When I'm not home--they are separated. At night (I feel bad for the dog because he's so lovey), the cat sleeps with me (which is what she's used to) and he sleeps outside the bedroom. I'll say KITTEN! when she's about to go toward him, and can sometimes grab her.

I don't know if she even has her claws out. She misses him a lot of the time--it's a pretty half-hearted attack, but this morning, she whapped him in the head (inside his cone!). I'm worried that she may hurt him--and as sweet as he is, he might just reflexively respond. Also, though I know that animals don't have to get along, it makes me sad that they can't be friends and keep each other company.

I wish that there was some kind of plan that I could follow to get them to be friends. It's not comfortable for anyone.
