Hi, I am moving two hours away in the next month or so, and am trapping my outside colony (TNRed years ago) to take with me - they will be safe in their own large cat rooms indoors. There was one cat I call "Bad Eye Cat" because of obvious reasons. He developed these bad eyes long after the TNR . because he is a transient, comes and goes, and could never trap him again after the TNR to get him to a vet, I couldn't track him down. While trying to trap 2 top priority girls, over night I checked the trap and was shocked and delighted to see I got Bad Eye Cat. I made an appointment with the vet for the weekend but wanted to run this past the forum too. Any suggestions on what happened to him? They are not oozing, red, infected, and he seems to see well. Is there anything I can feed him or supplement him? I know the doctor will have advice but since it's a few days from now I'd like to get a head start. He is not touchable.

It looks like he may have scarring from old eye infections.  I have one cat who has one eye like this.  He gets eye drops from the vet that contain steroids, and when the eye clouds, I use the drops until it is clear again.  It stays clear for awhile but then reverts to cloudy.  I think the vet says it is corneal edema related to the scarring and the drops (antibiotic with dexamethason in it) work just fine.  We have gone through this for years whenever his eye clouds.  You should never use a steroid in an eye until you are sure there is no ulceration in it, so the vet will have to stain the eyes before deciding how to treat.  A steroid can prevent an ulcer from healing and encourage it to get worse.

I just wanted to pop in and say Congrats on trapping "Bad Eye".  That was so very very lucky.  How wonderful he will make it to the vet and then onto a new indoor location.  Thank you for taking your colony with you.  I wish you success on trapping them all.

Hi, thanks so much for the replies! I have been busy this week trapping the others, I am sorry for the delay in replying. There are 7 total, and I have been fortunate to get 6 of them in two weeks. The last one is very tricky, I stopped feeding the wild birds a couple of months ago so when I move they would not be dependant on me for the winter... But then the cats stopped coming. So the trick for me was to start feeding the birds again, which brought the cats around and while they were here for the birds, took a nibble and then wound up in the traps. I will either have to slowly reduce what i feed the birds after getting #7 or when i move scatter a ton. Of bird seed all over the yard! I guess I will cross that bridge when I get to it. Vet appointment is for tomorrow -- thank you for the steroid advice. At least I am a little more educated going in. I know better now, i used to go in and take whatever they sold me, and not question. Lesson learned all vets are not ethical or knowledgable!
Yes, Bad Eye Cat is kind of small. He has been hiding, while the others are adapting better. I am sure it doesn't help that he can't see very well.
