I have a feline that isnt even a year old yet, more like 7-8months old, when i leave to spend the night with my boyfriend, my roomates lock my cat in a dark room that gets really hot (and i mean hot, even with -10 and the window cracked that room dosent cool off), with only his food water and litter, no toys or anything for him to do, he is usualy locked in this room 8-10 hours at night. can this cause serious problems with my little fur baby

i would say at least 80, they do this while im gone at my boyfriends place for the night. no toys, in there, if i leave them in there during the day he drags them out. the room gets hot to where you could sleep without any clothes, or a blanket and still sweat, and thats with the window cracked

No, that doesn't sound like it's ok for your cat. Overheating and dehydration are serious concerns.

Could you ask your roommates to put some toys in with him? I worry about a cat that young being confined for so long with nothing to do. And I definitely think he needs a fan if it gets that hot.
Have you asked them not to shut him in there?

Why do they lock him in there? Can't you explain to them its a bit sad to lock a cat in one room for a long period of time? Not trying to make you feel bad, to be clear, you obviously came here because you love your cat. I agree to at least put a fan in there and making it your own responsibility to put things in there to somewhat occupy him. Ideally I'd suggest explaining it to them that they wouldn't like being locked into a hot room for a long period of time every day either.

All he does there, probably, is sleep. So don't feel too bad. But I do feel it would be a huge change for the better to make it comfortable for him.

Why are you letting them do that?
Have you had a talk with them?
Why can't he stay out when you are away? At the very least....he should have toys.

one of my roomates has a cpap machine, and his room is basicly the dinning room, so there is no door, i suggested putting a eice of cardbard against the night stand at night so the cat couldnt get to it, he refused, i told them im not letting them lock him up in a room all night. so we got a large wooden bored to put at the top of the steps so he wont go downstairs at night. i thought they would be using that, but i came home tonight after plans to stay at my boyfriends fell through. ( they thought i wasnt coming home) but when i came home the doo was shut and inside was my little one crying, and this isnt the first time I've caught them doing that, im feeling like they just toss him in there and not care. he has food, water and littler, but a hot room in total darkness for 8+ hours a day.....im furious. but i want to know if during the times when i caught them doing it, would that have caused any issues with him mentally. He's in tom cat phase right now, working on getting him fixed next month.

dont get me wrong, i take care of my little furball, loki is like a child to me and i throughly went off on them, after tonight i left a note for them in the morning, after i put the board up at the top of the steps ( so he can run around all of the second floor where i live) and let my kitten out, telling them if i catch it again, ill take the door off its hinges and throw it in the yard.

Does your boyfriend ever stay with you? If you're home, they can't lock him in, right? ;)
Has Loki ever actually been an issue with the cpap machine, out is your roommate just worried that he might be? I had to look up what a cpap machine is, but it sounds like what my dad has, and their cats have never messed with it that I'm aware of.

If you really can't keep them from shutting him in, try to get a fan and some toys he can't drag out, and make sure to turn the fan on before you leave. :)

Just noticed the question in here. It's he still acting normally? How many times have you caught them?

Where does your cat live when you are home?

What difference would it make when you are gone?

Do you have a bedroom? You could keep him in there with the door closed. That would be a better alternative than that little tiny hot  box room.

Have your boyfriend sleep over your place.

Move in with your boyfriend? Can you take your cat with you when you stay overnight?

Sorry, but this does not sound like a good situation for your kitty..

Yes, the sooner he gets neutered, the better for all.

I do not think a cat would be interested in a c-pap machine when it is running. It makes too much noise. They may be afraid of it. Does your housemate keep it covered during the day?

just thoughts and ideas..

Good luck..

I know this may not be an option for you, but if it was me, I'd either move out or kick the roommate(s) out, depending on the situation. I wouldn't even want to know, much less live with, people that treat animals with such utter disrespect and cruelty. Just because they give him things to satisfy his basic physical needs doesn't mean they aren't being cruel. And I'm afraid even if you did take that door off its hinges, they'd find something worse to do to him.

And the one with the CPAP machine needs to get over himself. The cat won't likely want to be near the machine while it's running as someone stated. And he should be covering it during the day, regardless of whether the cat is around or not. PLENTY of people with CPAP machines have cats and have no problems. Your roommate needs to realize he isn't so special.

Sorry, reading about this just made me so angry. If anyone treated my cats that way I'd kick their arses so hard. I have names for people like that but I can't type them here.

Thank you everyone for the advice i went off on them, and told them that i will not put up with this, I told them that what they do is cruel to to any animal. Ive taken care of the situation and ive come up with some ideas, its a litlte more work on my part but  will not let them do that to my baby anymore.

to answer some questions, My boyfriend has a really bad back and my room has a futon, which messesy with it, so he cant really sleep here, we have talked, come feb 11th my little man is going in to get neutered, and then i will be moving in with him. Its gonna be tough for a little while till i move in but i will do what I can.

Also on a side note, im curious if anyone knows what this is.

my little one is in tom cat phase right now, and getting fixed soon, for the past few months since he hit puberty, there is one stuffed animal, its really small he is super protective off, he will nip and meow at anyone trying to go near it. he carrys it around in his mouth everywhere. he will lay it on the ground and climb on top of it, at first i thought he was humping it, but now im not sure, he climbs on it, kneeds it a bit, and hunches up on it, kinda like a cat does when its going to the bathroom, and he just sits there like that for a while, then moves, prepositions and does it all over agian. Is he humping it?, should i be concerned? he seems to get real upset if you take it away, almost kinda sad. He makes these affectionate little meow/purr like sounds, and he like to bring it up to people to do this, and he will look at you while he dose.

I'm so glad to hear you have a plan in place!

Regarding the stuffed animal, I had a cat with a duck that he loved. I think he was seriously IN love with it because my mom threw it away after many years of him... having fun with it and carrying it around. We had to get him another one. He also liked to steal socks and carry them around like that so if you ever notice any folded pairs of socks missing... he treated the socks like a mama would her babies though. We never thought of it as a problem. It was just part of what made him who he was. I get a bit more concerned over the fact my one kitten likes to suckle his brother's armpit still at almost 8 months old :lol3:

thanks for the feed back, yeah my aunt and boyfriend like to joke and tell me, you shouldnt worry about its, let him have his first love, he seriously loves that little fox toy, but is he trying to hump it you think? or is he just showing dominance all the time. My little one loves me, but at times the tom cat in him makes him a grouchy butt.

He could be. Thumber used to hump his Donald Duck (and he was fixed!) so it's certainly feasible. Definitely wouldn't consider it a problem though. If he sprays, that's a problem. But humping a stuffed animal, well... it may need to be washed at some point, lol. But otherwise nothing to be worried about. I wouldn't think of it as him showing dominance. Thumber didn't like having Donald taken away from him either, so we just let him have it! Didn't hurt anyone or anything :)
