Just wanted to share something that helped Foster (Maine Coon) & was a bit of a surprise.
Short history: Foster beat me up until I adopted him about 2003 (he was a young adult stray at the time). He had major vomiting issues from Day 1: nothing helped. Progressed to bloody/mucousy diarrhea. tried everything: eventually Rx hydrolized protein diet offered some relief. I'd tried canned pumpkin more than once.
Around Thx, I had a bunch of baked fresh pumpkin, mixed some in with Foster's food since he likes the taste. His vomiting immediately reduced drastically in frequency & his stools --always sorta iffy-- firmed up & stopped smelling revolting. Totally different response to the canned pumpkin (which was nil). I've tried other types of winter squash as well as sweet potato (the dog is now on restricted Rabbit & Sweet potato diet); they all work about equally well. He still vomits occasionally, but the situation is definitely better.
Why fresh but not canned? Beats me. I just know there is a difference. Don't know if canning wipes out something like vitamin A, or something else-- you'd think the fiber would be unchanged-- & I don't care. I just know it is an improvement.
Dog is on probiotics now, & I'm giving a bit of those to Foster to see if that helps any...some improvement is good, more would be better. No response yet, but only in our first week.
Hope this helps somebody!
