I like the idea of freeze dried food for our cats.

We have much more experience with PRIMAL but  this past weekend I purchased for the first time an "Honest Kitchen" offering.

http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/prowl

Although it is grain free there does seem to be (too?) many vegetables (eg potatoes and sweet potatoes).

But I do like how easily and quickly it dissolves in water. And so far all 3 of our cats like the taste.

Do others have experience with the Chicken ("Prowl") or the Turkey ("Grace") ?

My Aby didn't like it very much so I stopped buying it.

I think it's too carby, especially the Prowl at almost 20% carbs dry matter (plus one of our cats can't eat potato anyway!), but I seem to recall a few people saying their cats liked it and did well on it.

Primal has quite a few vegetables and fruits, too, but at least it's low-carb: we feed a lot of that!

I recently had an email discussion with HK. While I really appreciate the company and most of the ingredients, they are heavy on the potatoes. I used Grace (HK was very generous in sending me free samples).

When I opened the packets, both cats were extremely interested in the food yet after following instructions to the tee, e.g., correct amount of water and time to allow the food to thicken, the cats wouldn't touch it, it was soup.

I read a review, however, from someone who refrigerates the mix over night, and ends up with a solidified pate the next day.

Also, I have read that others will add meat, I asked HK how much turkey meat I could add to a packet of Grace without compromising and diluting the HK nutrients. I was told that for each packet half the amount of turkey can be safely added.

Grace's carb amount is lower than Prowl, on a DMB it's roughly 14%, although that's still on the high end for a cat.

Carbs aside, however, I still think Grace is a fine food. HK uses human grade ingredients. When I mixed in turkey my Molly gobbled it up. The point of adding turkey breast is to not only dilute the carbs but also give the cat something meaty to bite into vs soup to lap up.

I asked HK if they would ever consider replacing the potatoes / sweet potatoes and just using extra pumpkin which is already in Grace, I was told the suggestion would be passed on and considered ...

HK isn't freeze dried, it's steamed and dehydrated, hence, HK are not raw food products, per my discussion with HK.

So it is different in that respect to the PRIMAL nuggets which are freeze dried?

(Am I safe in assuming that neither product needs to be refrigerated after opening?)

Yes, very different.  Primal is freeze dried raw - the only difference between Primal frozen nuggets and Primal FD is that the latter has had the moisture removed. Primal is raw - no heat or steam added (only HPP - high pressure processing of their poultry products only, HPP is extreme water pressure to help remove salmonella, E-coli, listeria, etc).

HK is not raw because their food is steamed and then dehydrated.

Neither product should be refrigerated after opening. Just make sure after using that you get all the air out of the bag(s) before sealing it back up.
