Hey so after the 550$ dental cleaning for Sansa we have stepped up mouth routines with enzyme toothpaste (though she still won't allow us to touch her mouth so we let her lick a pea sized amount from the tube) and supplement the dry feeding with science diet dental food. These kibbles are larger than regular kibbles so the cat chews them and the inside is softer with the intent on scraping crud from the tooth and gumline. So far this has gone miles in keeping Sansa's teeth healthy even though I cringe at the ingredient list.

We feed dry in the morning- they get almost a 1/4 scoop of Merricks grain free and about 1/8 cup of the SD.They get a "snack in the evening of maybe 1/16 cup of both. Then they get wet for their supper around 9. Sansa has almost completely stopped eating the Merricks and pushes it out of the way to only eat the SD then walks away. The cats are separated while they eat because we found she would eat her SD and then push Wally out of the way to eat his. He would end up eating all the Merricks. So we began separating them while they eat.

This feeding routine has sparked a weekend habit where Sansa will eat a little bit, walk away and then play or wander around for a while (hours) and then beg to go finish her meal. Since we are home on the weekend it's harder to ignore. Yesterday she got 2 snacks.

NOW, I do realise smaller more frequent meals might be a better way to feed my cats but on the weekdays we leave the house at 745 am and come home at 4:45 at the earliest. So it's not feasible to do the smaller meals thing.

The real point of my post is that this morning someone threw up their whole breakfast. I noticed the SD pieces were not chewed up which means someone is swallowing the pieces whole or mostly whole. They have been eating it for almost 3months and we have had no problems until now. I am thinking, and I might be wrong, that Sansa gobbled hers up so fast that she didn't chew them because she was so hungry from the night before. I worry she is almost starving herself for the SD and then waiting around for the wet food.

You might suggest we increase the wet food intake. Maybe I will try that. Does anyone have suggestions for the large flat cans I can split in 2? I'm talking the friskies size flat cans (156g) not the tall ones because I don't have a microwave to warm up cold meals. Thanks.

You know, you don't have to use a microwave to warm up their food.  You can always just put it in a little ziploc bag and set that in warm water.  Works just as well, although it's a little messier.

So are you thinking about perhaps splitting one large can and one small can?   Since you are talking in grams vs ounces, you must not be located in the U.S.  That makes a difference in recommending foods.  So...need to know if you're asking about a tiny can food recommendation, and what country you're in.

BTW, I have a cat who doesn't chew large pieces of food either, most of the time .  Therefore, he doesn't get treats when the others do because he doesn't chew them but swallows them whole, then throws them up
.  I feel bad for him, but what else can I do, unlessI break them up for him, which I do sometimes, but good grief!

Sorry, I'm in Canada. The Fancy Feast cans are small 85g which is what I usually split between them for supper. I mix salmon oil an some water with it to bulk it up. When I talk about the friskies cans I mean the flat ones not tall ones.

Thanks, I never thought of floating it in a bag with warm water. I usually mix hot water in but it's still pretty cold when they go to eat it.

OK, so I guess I misunderstood.  You are splitting a Fancy Feast can between them and you want to increase that amount?  Why not just give them EACH a can of Fancy Feast?  Or give them Friskies?  OR, since they already eat Merrick dry, why not feed them Merrick canned?

What are your parameters for the canned food, other that you are looking for the size of a flat can of friskies, which is 5.5 ounces (in U.S. measurements).  Are you looking in a particular cost range, looking for grain free, etc?

Yes I was splitting the FF between them. Since posting I have changed it so they get their regular dry portion and after work they get a snack of about a teaspoon of wet plus a tiny bit of Merrick. That ties them to 9 when tey get the rest of their portion of wet. So I went to PS and bought a bunch of flat cans (5.5) and I use one full one per day. So far they seem to be enjoying it. The parameters you requested are preferably grain free so I got a few different brands to try.

I think my main question was how to improve dental work when I don't think Sansa is chewing the large dental kibbles!

Thanks for your suggestions :)
