My female cat is 10-11 years old and pretty overweight despite not eating a whole lot. She's always just been big.

Lately though I think it's been prohibiting her from being able to clean herself. I was looking and noticed that her bottom was very red and I had to clean some feces off of her fur.

She doesn't seem to be in pain and is using the litter box as far as I can tell. I've recently switched my cats over to a mostly wet food diet but I figured that would have the opposite effect than this.

I have pictures I will attach but ve warned that they are quite graphic.

Does anyone know what could be the cause other than her not being able to clean?

Pictues-!note that I've cleaned her up some with a warm towel since these.

Gorgeous  coat!  warm water gentle soap nothing that would irritate her I use baby

wipes non alchol natural safe.

I'd get the Vet to check that out ASAP!  she looks swollen infected back there.

it will give you info about glands and vids following-not the most pleasant subject. It shows someone expressing glands.

Thank you for the response! She does have a very pretty coat. Her eyes are beautifully green as well!

I'll try to get her in soon. Do you think they'll give her antibiotics? Or something else? Is there any chance shell need surgery?

Thanks!

Definitely clear human medications with a vet before using them on your cat.

I dabbed some witch hazel and "Triple Antibiotic" neosporin-type ointment for now until I can take her to the vet. I noticed that it contains Bacitracin Zinc, Neomycin Sulfate and Polymyxin B Sulfate. I read that Zinc was harmful to cats, but also read that this type of ointments were safe? Im not sure. I wiped it all off her now, but I want to know if its safe to give her in tiny amounts.

I would take her to the vet right away, but another one of my cats has had reoccurring UTIs the past month or so, and with antibiotics, pain meds, vet visits and a new RX diet, I'm out about 550 dollars. I'll take her if it gets serious, but I'm not in the financial position to bring her in just so I can pay a vet 120 dollars to give me something I can do at home already.

If you cannot speak to a Vet usually a Vet tech can run you through

their procedures to possibly get an idea what stages far along she is.

But of course no one can diagnose without seeing her.

Sorry no experience to share.

In the search bar you can type  ' abcess anal glands '   ' infected anal glands '

or '  impacted anal glands  ' to read other threads by posters. Just not long

ago someone experienced similar.

Zinc is definitely not safe for cats. And I think she does need to see a vet. She looks infected and quite uncomfortable.
