Hi.  I'm a newbie so I hope that I posted in the correct area.

I'm considering rescuing a Himalayan purebred cat but a veterinarian scared me today when he said that Himalayans have a serious risk of death during surgery because of their flat faces.  However, all of my research has said that Himalayans live an average of 15 years and that while their flat faces require daily washing and they may have breathing problems, is it really such a problem?  Does anyone know about this being a problem?  Is the vet exaggerating this situation?

Thank you!

I think "serious risk of death" may be overstating it, IMHO.  There are LOTS of people who own Himmys, and LOTS of them are neuters
.  Yes, I'm sure occasionally there is a problem, but that happens with any surgery.

You might call around to some other Vets just to get their opinion on the topic.

Question the vet further and the rescue. It may have something to do with the inner shape of the nose and mouth. However any good vet is aware of this and would be prepared for it if you cat ever had to have surgery.  At least your vet talked to you about potential health risks and made you aware of something you might want to investigate. All pets can die or have a reaction to surgery. I wouldn't let it bother me.

Thank you for your advice.  I appreciate it!

Maybe the vet is anti-purebred cat or maybe he just doesn't know what he's talking about.

You made me feel better, so thank you!

The issue is the same in cats, dogs and horses. Breeders trying for the extreme look.  Before adopting ask if you can take the cat to a vet for a basic examination. It will likely come out of your pocket but may prevent you from adopting a cat that will need a lot of medical care or allow you to make an informed choice. Any pet no matter how healthy it looks can have issues.  From a shelter, the street , a rescue of the most well respected breeder. There can be no absolute guarantees.

And yes it appears some breeders have tried for such extreme faces that cats need surgery to be able to breathe normally.
