This kitty showed up at our house New Year's Day and hasn't left. I have a female cat as well. But I don't know if this is a boy or a girl. Can you help?

This kitty showed up at my house New Year's Day cold and scared. I've waited and asked around the neighborhood to see if it was anybody's and nobody has claimed her or him. We have a lot of stray cats where we live and one had a litter about a couple months ago so we are thinking it may be one of hers. I brought in one from her previously litter and its a female. I would really like to know if the kitty is female or male.

The striped one is the one I'm asking about.

I'm not sure about the sex, but you should have this new cat checked out by a vet. Is it vaccinated? Fixed? Dewormed? Have you tried looking for an owner?

You may need to worry about your resident cat being infected with something or even impregnated, if she is not fixed. Better to know so you can treat both kitties.

Oddly, I can't really tell.  I see no vaginal opening, so that makes me think male.  But there are no testicles, either, so is there a chance it's been neutered?

He/she is a pretty cat!  Have you had it to the vet's yet?  They may be able to tell better than I can from photos.  Sorry!

Kind of looks like a torbie to me which would very likely (and I mean VERY) make them a female. I agree with talkingpeanut though about it being wise to take her to the vet to be tested for FIV/FeLv, scanned for a chip, etc.

What a sweet looking kitty! So nice of you to take it in. Looks like they are already getting along!

A vet check is an excellent idea. The vet can tell you the sex, and if the cat is fixed. Are you planning to keep this kitty?

It looks to me like a neutered male or a male with undescended testicles. Gently squeeze the smaller spot a little and see if a penis comes out. If it does, you have your answer.

Honestly it is really hard for me to tell whether kitty is male or female from the pics. Does the opening look more like a O shape or more like a slit? If the hole is more round looking it is usually male, females usually have more of a slit opening. Occasionally I have seen females who are full grown who can be mistaken for a fixed male. If you want to touch and see if a penis comes out usually it is obvious right away. Males usually have more distance between the opening and their anus than females but not always. If you are really unsure probably best to take kitty to the vet, always a good idea to check to make sure he/she is healthy too like others have said.
