Hello!

I have just received my first kitten, Totoro yesterday. I'm 20 years old and have a 3 year old daughter
Turns out today I am taking my kittens litter mate and brother, who I've named Whisper.

Totoro and Whisper are 5 weeks old, and should be able to poo on their own right? I don't have whisper yet, but Totoro hasn't pooped since he got here
He peed once (that I know of... On me) and he's been eating kitten chow and drinking small amounts of water. He just hasn't pooped yet

Is this normal? Might having his brother as company reduce some of his stress?

Thank you for reading, I'm so excited to have my new addition I'm just worried about his pooping.
Totoro is the gray and Whisper is the white (he was younger in the pic it's the only one I have until later today)

Yes, its very good you take two siblings, it will help them and you a lot.  You know of course they are pretty young, essentially you can see them as orphans...  So be very mommy and caretaking of them!

Be sure he has lotsa to drink, esp if its dry food he gets.

If he is still  constipated,,you can add a couple three drops of some good coldpressed oil -  organic rapeseed / canola oil is probably best,  a cheaper coldpressed but not really organic is OK.   Rapeseed oil is almost neutral in flavor, so its easy to give.

Same with olive oil, although its a shade sharper in flavor, but its too a good choice.

Awww ... Sweet! They will love being together!

It's important at this young age that the kittens have pate-style wet food. Fancy Feast makes an excellent kitten turkey pate. They would also benefit from drinking kitten formula from a bowl. The powdered form from Pet Ag is recommended. You just mix the amount you need. It's available at pet stores.

I wouldn't worry about the poo for a day or two. Wet food with a few drops of olive or vegetable oil mixed in will help with bowel movements.

They are adorable! I can't add anything to the excellent advice you've already gotten. They will be fine in a few days.

Thanks everyone!
They both refuse to eat the wet food I have for them.
But we got poop shortly after his brother arrived!
They're thriving :)

Why were you able to adopt them so young? It's really best for them to have access to wet food. Can you try other wet food brands for kittens? Or soak the dry kitten food in kitten milk replacer? They are just Barry weaned. They should have fresh food and water constantly available.

At this young age they'll also need to be confined to a single room that is kitten proofed. It should have multiple litter boxes so they always have one in sight. Otherwise, as you've found, they'll likely have accidents. It also helps to place them in the litter box before and after meals as a reminder for now.

At their age, try adding a little water or kitten milk to their wet food and stir it to make a kind of slurry or slush and they should lap it up. My Boys are 20 months and I still do that for them (I add just enough water to rinse the juice from the bottom of the can - maybe an ounce) and they prefer it like that. If I just chopped their pate` up in chunks, they would lap the juice, take a few bites and leave the rest. They will only eat pate`.

Also, feed them from a shallow glass, ceramic or stainless dish (you can use a disposable pie pan for now too - avoid using plastic food and water dishes) so they don't have to stick their face down in a deep 'cave'. Cats like to be able to see over the rim of their dish and 'watch for predators' while they eat. They also don't like their whiskers to touch the sides of the dish.

They should be starting to nibble on Kitten kibble in a week or so.
