Dear cat lovers,

I turn to you because you will be able to advise me best. Here's my conundrum:

My 1.5 year old Persian cat has been struggling after he scratched his eye in October. Ever since then he has been wearing a collar as we tried to heal the cornea with topical medication. Alas, a sequestrum formed. We tried to accept the sequestrum and avoid surgery but as soon as we took the collar off, he scratched his eye once again and we had to repeat the entire process. The vet decided he has to go into surgery because that's the only way. Now this is fine but- his surgery is scheduled next week. I just got accepted to travel for 6 days on very important work related business. Between his surgery and my trip I will have 5 days to spend with him and give him medication. After that, he would stay at home alone with my boyfriend who is away most of the time at work (from 6am to 5pm). The vet thought this might be a problem and suggested I bring him for 6 days to stay at the vets office. This worries me SO much because I know how much he hates it there, and also, they do not have anyone supervising the animals during the night. I know it wouldn't be a problem health-wise, or at least not eye related, but I know he will be really stressed out. I am so worried that I'm thinking of not going on this very important trip.

Do you guys have any advice on what to do? I do not have any friends or family in the city who would be reliable enough to call to take care of him while I am gone. I suggested that we push the surgery until I come back, it would only be a 10 day difference...and considering he has been like this for so long, I don't see the harm in it, but the vet is worried (again, he says its a precaution thing and that he has to warn me) that maybe his condition will worsen while I am gone if he doesn't get the surgery.

What would you guys suggest? Do I have them push the surgery and then spend all of the recovery time with him at home...or do I have him go through the trouble of recovering in a strange environment I know he hates?

Any advice would be very helpful as people around me think I'm making a big deal of it but you guys know how sensitive our little boys and girls are.

Thank you so much in advance!

Can you get a pet sitter to come in midday and check on him and give him his medicine while he's at your boyfriend's? Maybe a vet tech who wants to make some extra cash on her lunch hour? I suspect it'd be a lot easier for a cat to heal in a comfortable environment than one where he's very stressed.

I agree. Problem is where I live, the practice of pet sitting and such isn't really common. It's a tricky situation, but that's a good idea. I am leaning towards postponing the surgery...I think he needs proper, stress-free care after surgery and being in a cage at the vet's for 6 days surely isn't the proper thing for him.
