Owning a dog makes you more attractive if you are male, while a cat is a dealbreaker

That's so funny, because the fact my brother had cats was part of what made him so appealing to my sister-in-law when she first met him.

I saw that on the news, and I disagree with it. Both my sons have two cats apiece, and their wives love them (their husbands, but the cats too). I would know a man who likes cats is one who I could relate to. And take a look at YouTube - Cole and Marmalade are owned by a man, and someone who posts on Bengals is a man. Since I have a cat, a man with a dog could cause havoc at my house.

Depending on the dog, that could be a deal breaker for me.

Yeah this all subjective and totally pointless "news", cats are awesome, dogs are awesome, people who judge and disengage from another because of the feline/canine company they keep are shallow.

My brother has two cats and is not interested in a girlfriend.  He is straight but just thinks women are too much trouble.  LOL

That all makes sense, but I would be far more concerned if that person treated their animals with a high standard. A guy could have a beautiful Pug for example, a breed I adore,  but if he's un-nuetered and not cared for well that guy would be lucky I don't punch him in the face and run (excuse my violence). I'd much rather a man who enjoyed cats, but detesting dogs would still be a deal breaker for me.

Honestly a love of animals is kind of a requirement, I don't think I could date a person who didn't care much for them.

I'm with @Christfawk  . If my spouse didn't want me to have a cat or wasn't absolutely adorable and loving of our cat, it would be a definite deal breaker. Someone who has no compassion or care in their heart for animals is not someone I want to spend my life with! If he'd had a cat when we met, I would have been 1000x more interested in him not that he needed it.

The guy I met recently does not have any pets, but the fact that he said he had cats growing up made me like him all the more. I'd rather date a guy with cats/had cats/ or at least like them than a dog guy.

I guess the reason being, if the guy had a dog, or prefers dogs.. I know having a dog with my cats would not sit well with me. I like to think of "What if we hitch up.. what about my cats?"

If I didn't have any pets, I wouldn't care if the guy liked cats or dogs.

I suppose if a woman were looking for a man to marry and start a family with then yeah, I guess I could see how that might be true FOR HER but for me, having a dog does not make a man more attractive because I have no desire to be married again and the baby factory is closed. Unfortunately, I can't rent the space to a Neiman Marcus so I could get a discount on shoes, handbags and clothes.

If a man I was interested in had a cat or cats or said he was a cat person it would make him more attractive. Not liking cats? Deal breaker. I would not let anyone who disliked cats around mine. Even if they weren't mean to them, they would probably be disrespectful towards them and about their place in my life and my home. No thanks.

I hate to compare cat people with dog people or even play into the stereotypes, but here I go...
I think it takes a certain kind of person to like cats and just about anyone to like dogs. Dogs are more easily loveable but cats, to an "outsider" is hard to understand and love.

So to me, as a cat lover, knowing someone loves and has cats too tells me a lot about them. It tells me things like, they're good at understanding the subtlety of things, tolerant or don't have strict expectations of what companionship is like, etc. (I also think there's a difference between loving cats without having them as a pet and loving cats while having pets.)

I agree with you for the most part! I actually love both dogs and cats, and I actually work for a dog groomer and sometimes get poked fun at because I'm more a cat person than a dog person. (I compared cats are like chocolate ice cream and dogs are chocolate bars, for me, both are wonderful, but the ice cream is just a little better). I know a great many dog people, but I honestly don't like most dog specific people. (I don't care for most of our cat clients either, but its mostly because they make us shave their beautiful longhairs for no good reason, that and to people in my area, every long-haired cat is apparently a Persian) A good friend of mine "can't understand what makes people want to own a cat", while I can't understand what makes her want to own two crazy labs honestly. (Just not my breed, I love a few but they're too crazy and overbred for my tastes)

It takes the right person to love a cat for everything they are! I'll take that any day over a guy with a truckload of big, ill-mannered dogs! (Small ill mannered dogs are different though, I'll always appreciate an army of chi-mix things)

Agreed! And I like ice cream more than chocolate bars too hah!

I find it cat specific people rare but there are many dog specific people (which is absolutely okay. whatever floats your boat!). "Society" in general doesn't love cats entirely so that's why you have Buzzfeed making videos about "People who hate cats meet kittens" and no videos like "People who hate dogs meet puppies".

I would assume the long hair is too hard to maintain but I don't think I'd like to shave my long haired cat if I had one. My friend has a long haired cat and she gives him a permanent lions cut and says he's super cute and I just agree with her but I secretly don't like it
 HAHA

Actually, I did see a video of "people who are scared of pitbulls meet one" and it was adorable honestly. I like true animal people, my boss and are that way. She has 4 dogs and a bunch of fosters and god knows how many cats now, I think maybe 6? But we went down to a farm in our area and were trying to make out with the sheep all the same, she even just recently rescued a pig. I know a lot of people who also love cats but are allergic, I have an asthmatic friend who, while she never had a cat so is wary of them going full psycho when she's here, loves them even though she'll die.

The hair can be hard to maintain, but the thing that always bothered me is if you don't want to maintain the hair, why get a longhaired cat when there are so many short hairs in need of a good home too? The lion cut can be cute and all, but shaving a cat with a coat like that ultimately stunts the hair growth, and your once beautiful coated cat has hair like cheap comforter stuffing. The only people who I understand are some clients we have with two persians who are seriously the devil, one once ripped the palm of my hand open once, and that's with sedation. (they should really pay the extra money to have their vet do it with less stress) They're unable to brush the cats and I don't think they knew what they were in for when they got them. (I also doubt they went to any kind of reputable breeder who familiarized them as kittens to necessary grooming). Tell your friend she'll be sorry the time the hair doesn't grow back at all!
