I'm sure this is a topic most of us pet owners think about time and time again: people abandoning their animals for "bad" reasons or no reasons at all.

I recently started a new job at a pet store and I heard that someone left two cats at the groomers, meaning they never picked them up after their appointment. The groomers were told one of the cats had kittens and even looked swollen when they took them in for their appointment. When the groomers tried to contact them via the vet, even the vet had a bad point of contact. Thankfully, where I live, we have a great no-kill shelter and cat sanctuary and that's what I think is the shining light at the end of this horrible story.

I just don't see why people would go through so much to abandon their animals. They would have had to go to their vet to make sure the cats are vaccinated and then come and drop them off at the groomers. Why not directly go to the shelter? Why make up this farce of a story that you're just pleasantly tending to your pet's grooming needs?

I feel bittersweet about this. On one hand, it's better that the cats are at the shelter than with their previous owner. On the other hand, WHY do people do this????

I recently read a post made by my animal shelter about a dog that was adopted and how the previous owner surrender the dog because they felt the dog was distracting their child from his studies... I wouldn't know how to react if I worked at the shelter and I had to listen to people's reasons for surrendering their animals.

Anyway, thanks for reading and listening. This has been bothering me for a while!

I've never understood people abandoning their pets, or giving them up. I know there are some extreme circumstances, but people who truly love their pets generally try very hard to ensure their pet has a good home in the event they can't keep them. Others use fosters. I have a friend that fostered a boxer for a couple that temporarily had to move from their home (which they lost ultimately due to the husband being laid off from his job) into an apartment that was not boxer-friendly. I'm sure there are other situations under which a true foster can help out. In those situations, the owner still pays for everything, someone else is just providing temporary housing.

I don't know very many people that would go to those lengths unfortunately.

I was raised in an environment were very few circumstances under which we'd get rid of a pet. I was bitten in the head by a rescue dog my sister had taken in when I was 2 years old and we had him until he died of old age 11 years later. Just to give you an idea. I can't imagine "getting rid of" pets though. And abandoning them especially.
