I bought a blue British shorthair 3 days ago from a reputable breeder. However since getting him home he barely eats or goes to the toilet. Also, many people have said he is tiny for his Age of 13 weeks and they think he was probably the runt of the litter. Is this bad practice by the breeder to not tell me this? Not that I'd take him back or anything, but I'm just worries about him all the time. He doesn't play at all and most of the time sleeps. I took him to the vet and they gave him special wet food as they think he may be having trouble passing solids due to stress of new home.

Is there any way to tell if he is a runt? And if he is what can I do to make him big and strong and have the best chance of being fit and healthy? As he seems very weak and slow at the minute.

Thanks for your help

It's very common for kitties to be like this when in a new environment.  He's probably just scared.  He's in a new place, with new people, new sounds, new smells, and a new routine.  You might want to isolate him to a single room or bathroom until he's more comfortable in your home.  Then, as he becomes more comfortable, allow him to explore the rest of the house.  You just want to make sure he is eating and using the box before opening up the whole house.

As for the whether it's unethical of the breeder to not tell you, I would say no.  Not all kitties are the same size and even if he was the runt, there's nothing that will keep him from not growing into a normal sized adult kitty.

Do you have any other kitties in your home?  If not, you might consider adopting another kitty of similar age to keep him company and to help him socialize and develop good manners.  Of course, only if you feel like you can afford it and all that stuff.

Thank you for the quick reply. He just seems so weak!! Maybe this is just to do with the lack of appetite and possible constipation the vet diagnosed. Maybe I'm worrying for nothing.

He doesn't seem scared, in fact he is very needy and follows me everywhere and sleeps on me most of the day which I love, but not sure this is normal for a kitten his age. Surely he should be destroying the house or at least running about a bit? Lol

It's not normal.  Kittens this age are usually very active and full of energy.  He may be coming down with an upper respiratory infection. I'd call the vet in the morning and ask what they think and also contact the breeder and talk with him/her about his behavior.

I was at the vets with him today and they checked him after I told him the symptoms. Very concerned :(

Hey Stephanie,

He's still not very active. I'm pretty sure it's constipation....he is straining himself but can't seem to go. Gonna take him to the vet again tomorrow and see if there's anything else to help him. Poor wee thing :(
