Hello, i own a 3 year old short haired tortoiseshell cat named Catkin, about 5 weeks ago i noticed she was making a whistling sound through her nose when she slept, so i took her to the vets and he said it was most likely a cold as their are no other symptoms and he gave her an antibiotic which seemed to really help she stopped whistling but a week later i noticed that when she slept she sounded like she had a stuffy nose but still no symptoms and was acting normal and eating. so i took her back to the vets a week later and the vet said she sounded better than before and its probably a virus and that to bring her back if she had any other symptoms, she hasn't had any other symptoms but still has a stuffy nose, sometimes its very quiet other times loud and sometimes i cant hear anything at all when she sleeps, she sometimes breathes a little stuffy when shes awake at times but not constantly, i'm not sure if i should wait and see if she gets over it or is it something more serious?

any advice would be welcome thank you :)

How long have you had her?  Is it possible she's snoring?  I have a snorer and it can sound kind of funny.  Do you only hear her when she's sleeping or do you hear it when she's awake?  Is she snorting, sneezing, or coughing?  Is she still eating normally, playing normally, and using the box normally?  Sorry for so many questions, but I'm trying to narrow things down.

thank you for your reply :)  i have had her since she was little as my friends cat got pregnant and  gave me her from the litter of kittens, she does do it while she is sleeping sometimes other times she doesn't make a noise while asleep, but occasionally she does make small stuffy sounds when she is awake. there has been no snorting, sneezing or coughing and she eats normally, plays normally and is her self still in every aspect apart from the stuffy nose breathing :)

I would say she's probably okay and it may just be one of her quirks, especially since she's not out of sorts otherwise.  Keep an eye on her and if her behavior, eating, or litter box habits change, then be concerned and get her to the vet.

Thank you sooo much for replying, i do hope she is okay, she hasn't been going out as much as usual as it has been rainy and gets dark so early and we cant let her out in the evenings as we live by a small road and she is a dark colored cat :) but i will defiantly keep my eye out for any changes.

hello again my cat has still been fine still a bit stuffy, so i gave her some tuna as it has lysine in and i thought it might help her with her nose, but today in the evening she was sat in my airing cupboard and she suddenly started looking like she was trying to bring up a hairball, so i picked her up and put her on the floor so that she wasn't sick on everything but she stopped when i put her on the floor, she then followed me into the kitchen and jumped on the side like she does when she wants food and has now gone back to sleep in the cupboard. but i was concerned that maybe it was a cough? or was it just the start of a hairball?    she hasn't has a hairball in a while. thanks

Maybe she was coughing?  If she does that again, I think you'll need to take her back to the vet.  Can you go to a different vet for a second opinion?

I'm wondering how your cat is doing and if you ever found a cause of the chronic stuffy nose. I have a foster cat with the same problem, no other symptoms (no discharge, no sneezing, clear eyes). I'm wondering what it might be.
