You are doing what you can for your little one, I, too, have an oldster that pretty much quit eating and know how worrisome it can be.  I give him chicken broth which he laps up, just boil a couple of chicken pieces for an hour or two until they fall apart, no salt or spices. Very soft chicken cut into tiny pieces might be easier for him to eat too. Get some infant pediolyte to give him instead of water, and maybe some kitten milk in the pet section, it is high in calories and builds up a compromised system. Right now don't worry WHAT he's eating at all, just get him to eat. All the luck, I'll keep him in my thoughts and prayers!

I lost my calico Josie from an unexpected illness June 2014 and some pet grieving websites really helped me get through it (friends and family, too).

www.petloss.com

This helps identify the stages you might go through after suffering a loss!!  I also hope you have friends and family to help ease the pain.

What did he have?  Calicivirus?

My Josie (see avatar) died from a diabetic coma.  I blamed myself for the longest time but I eventually worked through it.  Like I said, that website really helped me understand all the stages of grief that I went through.  Our kitties are our children and it's just as devastating to lose one.

Do you have a photo of your baby?

Let yourself cry. It can be emotionally cleansing. It will be get better; it just takes time.

My Josie girl is with your kitty so he's in good hands!

I am so sorry for your loss! And sorry I just saw this now, I was going to say that sounded like pretty bad kidney failure. Ulcers come up when the toxins are pretty high. I feel so bad for you :( My Lucky, who also died from kidney disease, is on the welcoming committee knowing him, and I'm sure he greeted her with open arms.

I knew about it before the ulcers because he was acting differently and getting finicky with his food. I'd gone through that with my Sara earlier in the year and didn't think it was anything major, but they did tests on him. He already had very early chronic kidney disease, not even symptomatic. But then he suddenly was in Stage IV acute-on-chronic renal failure. He died sixteen days after being diagnosed.

Out of curiosity, did your vet run blood work at that first vet visit? I'm surprised it was not caught then.

My other cat, Moses, developed ulcers in his mouth but he was diagnosed with calivirus.  Interesting.  That was over 7 years ago. (He's fine)

Donutte-

How old was Lucky?  Moses is now 16 and I'm always paranoid about this kind of stuff.

Lucky was sixteen. In his case, the vet thinks he probably had a tumor in his left kidney (because it was absolutely huge on the x-ray, I couldn't even tell it was a kidney). We had tried to treat it as though he had an infection, but it didn't work, his numbers just got worse. He didn't develop the mouth ulcers until a day or two before he died. My poor little ol' man had blood all over his front paws on his last morning before we took him to the vet. At first would couldn't figure out what it was, but then the vet said it was probably from ulcers in his mouth. I felt so bad :(

I wouldn't be paranoid with your boy, just make sure he gets his vet visits in regularly. They can run tests and see if anything is brewing that you might not notice yet if he is asymptomatic. CKD is fairly common in cats, but it is manageable. My Sara has CKD. What got Lucky though was when it became acute, which is a lot worse.
