So my 2 year old cat is only one of my 5 cats currently. His nickname is normally fat boy or big boy, but not anymore.

This is a diet I have been using for weight loss over the course of 3-4 months not super fast like most vets would recommend or have you do.

This method is very simple and easy to do and not very expensive.

All that I did was I would buy a very mild in protein WET food so no 95% meat wet food for this.

Buy a very high protein dry food such as orijen or evo, instinct.

When you feed say a 18 19 pound cat only feed them as if they are a 10 or 12 pound cat.

In my case the amount of wet food was half a can. Use half a can of the wet per serving or split it into 3 servings if you have time,

each serving just take a regular spoon and give that much of the dry on the side of the wet if your cat isn't a picky eater.

This helps make it so you don't need to feed as much wet food to keep the cost down. A bag of orijen lasted me the whole 4 months I did this

This is just to balance out the cats diet. Just be sure to read the amount of calories. Regardless of the cats weight I never give a cat over 300 calories per day. For me I give about 250 total.

If you have the time to cook or prepare your cat their own homemade meal that is great but I didn't

During this time I also used a lot of catnip to help promote play in my cat for exercise while I was away.

I would also avoid using Supermarket brand wet and dry cat food if it is at all possible.

If you live in a multi cat home or even with dogs make sure you have all of them on a schedule and if possible try putting the cat you want to lose weight away from the other pets during feeding time so after meal snacks can be avoided.

Some great tips here  So glad this method worked for you.

I wouldn't dismiss ALL supermarket brands of wet though - some own brands are surprisingly decent quality (at least, they are here in the UK). IMO, reading the labels and judging on ingredients is the surest method when it comes to choosing foods ;)
