Im reaching out to the readers and posters on this site for help. As i write this i can hear my kitty cat coughing/drooling/swallowing underneath my bed. I dont know what to do. I need advice.
My cat is named Molly, she is a stray. When we found her she was missing teeth and had scars on her face. Eventually her long black fur grew over it and she was a normal cat. She was 3-6 years old when we took her in and she has been a solely inside cat for 8 years now. We guess she is 11-16 years old. She has never been good at grooming herself. Isnt very active. About 5 months ago i noticed she was having what looked like more eye boogers or googs or eye discharge along the area where her eye meets her nose. I didnt think much of it. It was solely on her left eye. Three months ago I noticed that eye getting cloudy. A few weeks later a scab started to grow as a thin film over the bottom of her left eyeball. Two months ago she stopped eating her dry cat food and farted out a blood stain on one of her favorite places to sleep, atop this chair. I was scared and immediately took her to a vet. This vet was in a ritzy part of town where price gougeing as well as lots of pet owners who would throw thousands of dollars at their pets problem. The sad thing is i have little to no money.
We did a blood panel, she reciened a conevia injection/shot, and was perscribed high calorie cat food. And after getting really good blood results the vet just forewarded me to a local cat/dog eye vet who only sees animals on wednesdays. The vet stuck her fingers in the cats mouth and of course the cat bit the vet so the vet stopped and said she couldnt tell what was wrong. They needed to sedate the cat. So after a weekend where i thought i was going to lose her she made a huge comeback.
By the time we got in to the eye specialist my cat Molly looks just awful. Her fur has all the clumps in it, shes rubbed off fur on places like her front paws and lower chin. Rubbing off near her mouth on the left side has revealed her old facial scars. The eye vet gave her some numbing drops and seemingly cut open the scab thing and put drops in and i saw green puss drain out of the eye. He gave me oral antibiotics and drops. He couldnt tell me if it was an abcess or a tumor and he said the cat was too old to do a proceedure and would likely not survive basic sedation drugs. Is this true? Is that a thing for old cats, they cant lower the dosage?
After two weeks i went back and they put her on stronger antibiotics, and different eye drops. She still is underweight. But she still does her normal behavior. She makes bread/kneading. She purrs a ton. She headbutts me. All things that make me feel like she is a fighter and all things show signs of life. The eye vet barely spoke english and he said it could be an abcess behind the eye, a tumor, or a third option hes unsure about. The procedure would be to remove her left eye, explore what the cause was, clean up the wound and sew her eye hole shut. But he doesnt think she would survive that, even if i could afford the $1000 it would cost.
Im now out of medicine for her. After completely a months worth of antibiotic treatments. Her eye scab has covered about 80% of her left eye. And now when she eats she makes sounds she used to not make. When i see her, i see sometimes that she is drooling out of that sick left side of her mouth.
If shes on death door, why doesnt she act less mobile or less energetic. Shes been the same energy wise for about a year. I know something is wrong. But i dont know if i should take her to a third vet, back to the eye vet, just try to get her antibiotic perscriptions refilled? Can anybody out there tell me if i should be trying to remove the scab on her sick eye myself? What it could be? Please help me out. I feel like i dont know what to do but i know i need to do something?

Hi, I'm so sorry about your kitty's illness.  I can really relate to your experience and the exasperation of dealing with vets, although Gracie's problem was a little different. It sounds like your kitty might have to lose his eye, but I hope not.  Hope someone else has experience with this specific problem and can guide you!  Also, do a search in the top search bar on this page and see if this problem has already been addressed on this site.  It's been here for years so there are tons of threads and posts.  Good luck and keep us informed how kitty is doing.
