Our cat is around 7-10 years old, and she has been getting lysine for her herpes, but recently she has been starting to sneeze really badly. Not to long ago, she was in my room sneezing, and while watching her I noticed she started breathing through her mouth. The lysine has been doing wonderfully, and she hasn't really sneezed until the other day. She has never had to breathe through her mouth before, and I am a little concerned. She is a(n adoptive) mother to one of my other cats, a 3 and a half year old, and he loves her dearly. Is there anything more I can do to help her? We tried the shower thing, and it does not help her, and unfortunately, our humidifier is not working properly.

Hi

Just to be sure, the open mouth breathing is because she is congested in the nose right?  If that is the reason, another thing you can do is get non-medicated saline drops at a drug store, one bran is Little Noses.  No medicine, just saline, and a squirt in each nostril 2-3 times a day may help loosen her up.  But open mouth breathing suggests serious congestion, and she may benefit from a vet appointment.

Stephen: Yes, it is definitely due to congestion. She stopped breathing like so, and went back to sleep. We cannot afford the vet visit at the moment, we should have the money within a week. Would it be safe to wait that long?  Is there any reason why she suddenly start going into fits again? Also, about the saline, she can be very difficult with medication, is there any special way I can give it to her? Thank you for the help. She is due for her shots soon anyways, so a vet's visit is definite.

OK.  I wouldn't describe the situation as dangerous, but uncomfortable for her.  Imagine you were so stuff that you could only breathe through your mouth.  As far as giving the nose drops, if there are two of you than one can gently restrain her while the other does the squirts, but if she is really hard to medicate then i would suggest a burrito wrap, see the youtube video.
As to why this started again for her, herpes is chronic and can recur, often times stress is responsible.

Oh, the reasoning for it is indeed herpes. It seems that her lysine formula was the issue. Apparently she is allergic to the milk we put it in. Actually, I have a cold, and am breathing through my mouth.
Yea, it is pretty uncomfortable. We are getting a new humidifier, so hopefully that will help! Thank you for the advice, I will definitely keep it in mind for future reference.Right now she is back to her normal fat, vomiting self!
