We've had him for almost a week. At the shelter he sat in my lap and we had a great time. Now that he's home I barely see him as he hides all the time. I'm afraid I may have taken on more than I can handle.
No, you haven't taken on more than you can handle, honestly. The poor boy probably did the same when he first found himself at the shelter; cats are territorial animals and it takes them some time to become acquainted with a new place.
When you first bring them home it's a good idea to keep them in a small space where then can feel safe, and begin their journey of discovery. You can sit there with him.. I used to go in with a book and read, sometimes out loud so he would get used to my voice. Don't push him into being affectionate.. it will evolve as he feels comfortable.
A Feliway diffuser or spray can help - it's feline pheromones and it can really help to settle cats in new places.
You've already been through most of this, but it describes the need for 'a sanctuary room': [article="0"]Bringing Home A New Cat[/article]
I'm sure your boy will be just as affectionate as he was at the shelter.. it just takes time.
Yeah Mani has great advice. Kitty just needs a moment to get situated in his new home.
A Feliway diffuser is great. I use one everytime I move with my cats, and I move a lot. My one kitty Daisy sits under the bed for a week, but the diffuser seems to make that time shorter.
So, beginning of 3rd week since we brought him home. He loves his food, poops in his box -But-he's only come out when we're not in the room and runs to his hiding place when either i or my husband go in. I wish he would come out, trying to be patient.
