Hello everyone,

I am posting this thread for my sister who has been having some trouble with her 12 year old cat, Tater. Long story short, she came home from work the other night to him in the middle of the living room screaming in pain and rushed him to the emergency vet (on New Year's Day at 9pm! Wonderful way to start the New Year...). They diagnosed immediately that he was blocked up and brought him in to remove the crystals. $3200 and 20 minutes later he was unblocked, but then the vet says he will need PU surgery this Monday at the latest which will be another $3200-$5000. He has been blocked before, and she got the crystals removed with a $2000 surgery. This was 5 years ago and he hasn't gotten a blockage since. My question is...what are a 12 year old cat's chances for a good quality of life after a PU surgery? She loves this cat to bits but she does not have this kind of money...she has applied for Care Credit and got approved but it only covered the initial blockage removal. Would he be okay if she were to opt out of this surgery? Are his chances of another 5 years without a blockage good, or slim? She fears that if she goes through with this surgery he either will not make it through or have a poor quality of life/hard time recovering. Has anybody put a cat through this surgery at such an age? Thank you for any and all advice, she has no idea what to do.

Do you know what diet the kitty is on? sometimes a diet can improve things markedly with respect to crystals.

As far as I know he has been on something the get recommended that is good for cats with this issue (not sure of the exact name).
