I have a male cat named GusGus!  He is a year and a half.  We had him fixed about 8 or so months ago and that is when we found out that the poor boy has kitty aids.  He is an extremely affectionate cat, never bites or scratches only cuddles, although he is NOT a kisser/licker.  In the last little while I have noticed (every once and a while) there seems to be some sort of liquid coming out of his anus (I think) and it is such a horrible smell it makes me almost throw up.  As soon as it happens he turns around and seems to start cleaning it up, which is strange because as I said he's not a licker (he only does when cleaning himself)  Is this something that can be normal?  Or does it have to do with his "kitty aids"?  I don't want him to be in any kind of pain and he doesn't seem to be, but I don't know what to do about this.  It is honestly one of the WORST smelling things I have ever smelt.  HELP please!

Hmm, sounds like you have discovered anal gland secretions!  I know it smells foul......

Have you noticed any diarrhea with your cat?  Or any straining when trying to poop?  Scooting his butt along the floor?

He may have an anal gland impaction - if you take him to the vet, they can express his anal glands for you.  (and they can show you how to do it yourself, in case the need should ever arise in the future)

Can't say for sure whether it's related to the FIV or not - but he does need to see a vet - make sure to tell the vet if you have seen any of the symptoms I listed above.

And how nice of you to care for this poor FIV+ kitty - it's not a death sentence by any means, but they do need some extra care - thank you for caring for him

It sounds like his Anal sac. I would take him to the vet and see what they can do..

It sounds like the liquid may be coming from his anal glands. These are either side of the anus, and when all is working properly a little liquid is squeezed out every time the cat poops. It's a way of leaving a 'calling card' - letting other cats know that they've been there. This is perfectly normal, but isn't something I'd expect to be aware of. I do know the secretions smell absolutely vile though.

Sometimes things go a little wrong with this process. It sounds to me as though that may be the case here. It's not a big deal, and certainly isn't anything to panic about. I would get him checked out by a vet, just to be sure of what's going on - sometimes these glands get impacted or infected, and need veterinary treatment. Don't panic though, it's usually very easy to sort out.

Thank you ALL so very much for your quick replies I sure do appreciate it!  I absolutely love my kitty, and can't imagine life without him.  I have been noticing this happening I'd say for about a month or so maybe a little more.  He doesn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort, although I haven't noticed any litter box changes (but that also has to do with the fact that we have 3 cats) He hasn't been rubbing his bottom on the floor or anything like that.  It just seems to happen so randomly!    On one occasion when this happened he was sitting on one of the kitchen chairs, it seems as though it was only about 5-6 drops or so, and I think it was a clear'ISH but cloudy liquid.  I've been a animal lover my entire life and have had cats around for much of it, this is the first time I've ever had this issue happen.  I guess that's why I got so freaked out.  It's a difficult issue to deal with because I love love love to snuggle with him and have him sleep with me, but it's getting hard to do now, as I can't have the liquid on our furniture (because it seems almost impossible to get that smell out) and it's so random when it happens.  It happened today but before today, I don't think it's happened for at least 2-3 weeks give or take (that I know of anyway)

****Does ANYONE have any tips on how to get this awful smell out of fabric???  I'm willing to try basically anything at this point.  Just want my baby(kitty) to be happy, healthy and comfortable.  He's loved so much by our entire family (Dad, Mom and 4 kids) and I don't want this issue to come between our snuggle times together.

I just finished chit chatting with my husband.  I didn't realize but he said that the liquid looked like puss to him.  Had a greenish look :'(  I hope that doesn't mean something else.

If it looks like pus then he's most likely got an infection in one or both glands. Shouldn't be a big deal to treat, but will need veterinary attention.

As far as getting rid of the smell, an enzymatic cleaner is your best bet (as zed xyzed zed xyzed has already mentioned). It may take multiple treatments to fully remove it though.

It shouldn't be leaking out randomly.  Take him to the vet so they can get him cleared out.  It does sound like he might have an infection too.

Now here is the truly disgusting part of the advice...if this is really random, take a clean Q-tip from an unopened pack, or better yet, a sterile gauze and wipe up a bit of the discharge.  Tuck it in a clean, unused zip top baggie and take it along with you to the vet.  You'll want to make sure the sample is fresh.  I imagine the vet will do a swap there, but every little bit helps.
