So in our apartment complex, my boyfriend and I have discovered either an abused stray or a feral cat. She's out an about often in the neighborhood, so yesterday, I sent him down to give her some wet food. He was able to pet her, but when he came back up, he informed me she had what looks like a gash on her face, so I ran down to find her, and after hesitation, she came to me. I was unable to get a closer look, because some kids (that are kind of nasty to the cats in area) scared her off. I called animal services and they informed me I'd have to trap her ourselves. We were unable to, so I called animal services again. Again they told me it was our responsibility to trap her, even if she was injured because I wasn't sure if it was fresh. Eventually someone came out, but he looked at the cat, and said nothing was wrong (even though she has visible injuries) and left. Because of this, I started calling local cat rescues in my area, and one got me in touch with a trapper. The trapper is going to see if she's able to trap the cat, so we can get her to a vet. Like I said, I couldn't see the extent of the injuries, but I feel like she needs a vet and lots of love. I just don't know where to take her. I can't afford to take her to the vet, because I'm taking my own kitten next week, but I'm scared to take her to the shelter, because everyone keeps telling me they'll put her down. I can tell she's very sweet, just very scared, and I don't know what to do to help her best. Any ideas?

She needs to be scanned for a microchip as a first step. Lost house cats get injured all the time and if a microchip scan is done and an owner is found, the owner would be responsible for paying her veterinary bills.

You know, I didn't think about the microchip. So once she's trapped where do I take her? Orange County? Like I said, I'm a little scared.

Alright! I'll be sure to do that, once we are able to actually trap her. I'm a little worried about finding her owner, because I don't think she's feral, but she definitely has trust issues. She's very anxious around people, especially children. A few of our neighbors said she's been here a couple of months and no one knows who she belongs to. I'm worried she was abused in her last home, then abandoned. But I guess I'll just have to check to see if she's microchipped first, and then go from there.

You can take her to a vet's office or you can take her to the SPCA of Orange County. Here is a link to the website for them. Most if not all vets will scan an animal for a microchip for free especially of you tell them the animal may be lost

If you are able to pet her, she is not a feral. She could be a stray, lost or a dumped pet (unfortunately). Thank you for caring.

I discussed everything with a local trapper, and she's going to start coming around to see if she can trap the stray, and when she does, I'll take her to a vet to get taken care of.

Once she is actually trapped, one of your local rescue groups should be able to come in and assist at that point.  I'm assuming from what you said about your own kitten that you aren't able to adopt her yourselves.

I wish I could, but we have a kitten and he's still adjusting and learning.

Do your best, Darlin,  It's all anyone can ask or expect.  As I said, once trapped, a local rescue group should be able to help.
