My one kitty that I've not mentioned very much here is my hermit-crab, Maple. She's a big black kitty. Really, big is an understatement. She's 13, almost 14 years old. I'm not sure how she got as fat as she did over the years, when not a single one of my others did.

I want to get her to the vet, but when you pick her up she pees on your if you're lucky. If not, she poops on you, and it's really nasty stuff, not like her normal poop. It's that stuff you hear about when animals get freaked out in the wild type of stuff. She can't clean herself very well, and seriously needs a bath. Another thing I need to pick her up for. And she's heavy, not sure how heavy but well, heavy. She does have a pretty big frame, so under normal circumstances she could easily be 14-15 pounds. I actually got her from a friend in Toronto whose cat had kittens that were born on my birthday. Her mother was a pretty small cat, but she thought the father was a really big cat that was dubbed "Father Black Cat". That was the only way she could be as big-framed as she was.

She got particularly bad after we got Sugar and the kittens. We thought it was just because of the new dog that she decided to never come out of my bedroom (not even for the litter box :( ) and that that was why she was getting so MUCH fatter. Then I saw her eating dry kitten food. The LAST thing she needed was that. It was on the cat tree on a level that was easy for her to get to from the back of the chair she always laid on after the dogs went to bed. We just moved it to another level - problem solved. We also had to move the regular dry cat food up because our dog was eating it (d'oh!) and now she gets some exercise because she HAS to jump to get to the non-kitten dry food. She actually looks like she might be losing a bit of weight after she lost access to the kitten food, which makes me happy.

This girl is very skittish. For the life of me, I don't know why, but she always has been. Another thing that makes it hard to pick her up. Anyway, she can RUN. I think she gets spooked by her own shadow because I'll hear her running at night. She looks like a cross between a skunk and a racoon the way she moves. But yeah, she can move somehow.

She's a really sweet girl with a loud voice who demands her fair share of petting and then some. She adores me and for the life of me I don't know why, because I feel like I've done wrong by her for letting her get like this.

Does anyone have any tips or experience they can share if they've found themselves in a similar situation? Or know someone that has? I know that ditching the dry food is something that would need to be done. I think it would be easy enough to do that with her - just move it up a bit higher for the moment. But I don't want to do anything too fast either. And yes, I will get that bath going and take her to the vet. I will just have to get up the nerve to get pooped on.

It is really difficult with multiple cats, with Midi I got him on to a mix of commercial raw and canned. I am very luck as he is a hoover and transitioning him raw took 2 days. If you can't change her diet can you increase her activity?

Poor girl!  First of all, I'd invest in some calming agents to help her de-stress and calm down, if you're not using them already.  Secondly, I'd go to canned food only, or start off with 2 wet food meals and supplement with a measured amount (about 1/8 - 1/4 C) of dry food.  Also, go to scheduled feedings and you'll have to probably supervise feeding times to make sure everyone eats their own food and doesn't horn in on others and eat their food, too.  Then, try to engage her with some interactive toys to get her moving.  Also, going to a grain-free food will help as well.

I've tried the "more activity" route. She's not really that interesting in playing much, but I think it's more because the kittens are rather... rambunctious. They jump high and land on top of whoever is in their path. She doesn't care for that! I considered taking her on the treadmill, but then realized she'd probably poop because it would probably scare her.

As far as making sure she doesn't eat more than her fair share of the canned food, I'm not too worried about that. Although if I restricted dry I might need to be more vigilant. I know for sure that Sara and Oliver are getting enough. Oscar and Penelopy are grazers. So is Maple, but that's because the moment someone comes near her while eating (usually another cat, or sometimes for reasons I don't even know) she runs away into my bedroom.

I'm a bit paranoid about the Feliway diffuser because of what I read about it potentially causing fires. Did that get fixed? I think it works best if left in at all times but I'm a bit nervous regarding that. I had seriously considered it though.

I've used Feliway diffusers (the same ones even!) for the past 8 years and have never had a problem with them.  They also make a spray you could try, but that doesn't keep it in the air 24/7.  Your kitty sounds like my Hannah.  She really would prefer to be an only cat and barely tolerates any of our other kitties.

You know, she probably would be. She's like the child born into a family with a bunch of kids wishing she was an only child. My friend that I got her from had more cats than I ever had! And I think she from a litter of 7 kittens.

She wasn't always like this though. I think she got like this after we moved here. She was always a big girl but nothing like now. We even had dogs! But we went two years without dogs and she doesn't like the dogs now. She always comes into the living room at night after they are in bed. She won't even come out for her food right away (unless it's kinda late, like it will be tonight) just to make sure all the ones she doesn't like are not there.

This is a recent picture of her, it was after the dogs went to bed so she was in the living room. Hard to get good pics of her for some reason.

Thank you, she really does have a beautiful face, and always had these huge round eyes. I was always so used to the almond eyes most cats have, then I got her and she's just got these big perfectly circular eyes!

Btw @Zed Xyzed, did I mention that my friend that I got her from was from the Toronto area? Yep, Maple's an immigrant.

she is lucky to have found her way to you. PS don't tell the Donald he might want to deport her

She was actually born on my 25th birthday and she was a black cat, my friend didn't need to twist my arm much. She was almost 4 months old when she came to Chicago. Her name is paying homage to where she's from originally. Goodness, I remember when she could fit in my hand.

lol, the Maple homage went right over my head, thanks for pointing that out (great name BTW, thank goodness you didn't name her Canuck, or Hockey)

We were THIS close to naming her Canuck! We have referred to her as our "Canuck Kitty" though lol. That was a long time ago though, she's totally Americanized now. Doesn't even have the accent anymore.

Yeah, I should log off now.

I think my plan will be this for the moment. I don't want to drastically make changes (like just taking away the dry food right now). So think I will move it to some higher location at night for now. I will try that tonight and see how it goes. She will still have the canned available to her so she will be good, she'll just have to venture a bit farther to get to it.

I have to plan a bath for her at some point. And thinking I should probably shave her behind. I don't even know how to begin going about that one.

I'm going thru a somewhat similar situation with my tabby, Archie.  At his last annual exam, the vet said that he was overweight - a 7 out of 9 on the weight scale; he should be a 5.  I have two cats and it's difficult to feed each of them separately.  I needed a plan that would work for everyone.

I've taken a three prong approach.  I'm using a somewhat lower calorie dry food (Blue Wilderness for Indoor Cats) and reducing the amount of food I place down.  Finally, I cut out the tarter control treats, which contain starch.  Now he and Lucy only receive freeze dried meat treats.  We started the new regime about a month ago; it seems to be working.  Archie appears to have lost a small amount of weight.

I have five cats total. Maple of course, whose weight is really unknown (we'll just call it "a lot"), two of whom are in the 7lb range (my other two girls), and my two 7.5 month old kittens. I don't really know their weight as the last vet visit they had was when they were neutered, but thinking it's already in the 9 lb area. They are such big kittens! They're already bigger than their Uncle Lucky was. My vet's in for a shock when they see them in July.

To add to this, my other 13 year old (one of the girls) has CKD. So I've been research low-phos foods like mad the last few days. I don't want to restrict her calories at all, because she can use a little bit of extra padding. She will probably be ok if the "community" food is lower calorie though. She recently JUST got up to 7 lbs. She is my kitty that early in 2014 got down to 4 lbs 4 oz due to hyperthyroidism-induced anorexia. Penelopy could probably stand to put on a little bit of weight, but she isn't at a horrible weight. The kittens are still kittens, so not really wanting to restrict them either. I'm having trouble just trying to find a compromise in the phosphorus department with them.

I should have paid attention to calories while I was at it. Dang.

Ok, starting making my own spreadsheet (oh god, you know it's bad when I've done that). Anything over 1.1% phosphorus got thrown out, anything over 65% protein was thrown out, and anything over 32 cal/oz was thrown out. I actually don't know what is considered a good cal/oz. I'm also trying to look at the lower carb ones. Amazing that some of the "grain free" ones have as many carbs as Friskies.
