I am fostering a kitten. He will be 8 weeks next week. I got him right at 6 weeks. He started off not going to the bathroom for a day or so but then finally did. It appeared "normal". Since then his poo has gone from almost diarrhea like to toothpaste consistency back to very mushy.  I did try giving him some plain pumpkin in his food and it really hasn't helped.  The consistency starts to get better then goes back to the mushy stuff. I am not sure what he was eating before I got him so I don't know if it is normal for his stomach to be adjusting to food or what???  I feed him Fancy Feast original chicken about 3-4 times a day.  He also has access to IAMS dry food (kitten formula) and I have noticed he is really starting to eat that. He also has access to water at all times.  He seems healthy.. eats, goes to bathroom, plays etc...

I am fostering from our local humane society so he was checked by a vet and given his 6 week shots plus de-wormer. His stomach does not feel bloated.

Should  I be concerned? Is there something else I can try?  Any advice or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

Lisa

His stools should be formed at 8 weeks and eating kitten chow and pate wet food. Though he's been de-wormed, he may need an antibiotic to clear up any intestinal bacteria. He should be adjusted to what you are feeding him after the last 2 weeks. I suggest you call and ask about an antibiotic for intestinal bacteria.

Can you try switching to the Fancy Feast Turkey?  The kitten may be sensitive to chicken.

One of my cats didn't always make it to the litter box when I fed them Fancy Feast.  Found a couple 'tootsie rolls' on the floor near the litter box.  So I've quit feeding it to them.  I'm not sure what bothers him in that food.

Thanks for the replies. Took him to get and he got medicine. Now there are no more issues EXCEPT we want to keep this foster. Trying to decide. He would make #3. If we keep him I am afraid my husband will never let me foster again

Aww. I took in a pregnant stray late last winter. She had 4 kittens in March. I have kept ALL of them, and have loved every minute of it! I wasn't planning to keep them all, but I couldn't decide who to re-home. My last old cat had to be put down in April, and my daughter took "her" cat off to college, so it came at a good time for me. My high was 7 cats, and now I have 5.

I think every cat deserves a good home, whether with its foster parent, or someone else. Once we've invested our time, our energy, our money, and our love, it's very hard to say goodbye.

Talk with your husband, and your heart, and you will know the right answer for your family [emoji]128149[/emoji].

So glad the vet gave you medicine and he is better now!
