Hello everyone,

My 8 year old baby was diagnosed with CHF 4 months ago and at his last appt., the Dr. tapped his chest and said that his thoracic duct is leaking or has burst.  Doing a lot of research about this, it says that a low-fat diet is imperative with chylothorax so my question to you all...

Any suggestions for a low-fat, low-sodium cat food? When he was first diagnosed with CHF, I about drove myself crazy looking for a good low sodium food and now having to find both is really difficult.

TIA

Jessica

I'm sorry about your baby. Have you thought about making your own food either homecooked or raw so you can control the sodium content?

I'm sorry to hear about your little guy.

The following list may be helpful to you, it is a compilation of many (not all) canned foods on a DMB (dry matter basis), which includes both the fat and sodium (in addition to protein, phosphorus, etc., it was designed with CRF cats in mind).

http://www.felinecrf.org/canned_food_usa.htm

I try to look for lower fat foods for my IBD cat as well as sodium (b/c her sodium was on the high end last cbc).  I have used Weruva's Steak Frites successfully.

You may want to contact Lotus and ask them to send you the DMB nutrient profiles for their Just Juicy line.  I remember getting info from them awhile back, unfortunately I didn't save the email. I think their JJ pork is on the lower fat end - you may want to inquire about their JJ turkey as well.

Pure Vita also - contact them for a DMB list.

We are doing a slightly higher fat diet than the Steak Frites she was on with our IBD girl that seems to agree with her but I do some raw as well.

Meats to avoid that are high in fat: duck, lamb.  Meats lowest in fat: rabbit, venison.

Missmimz's idea also of home-cooked is a good idea as well.

Good luck.
