Hello everybody. My cat Misty(strictly in-doors only) has developed a wound on her chin that I noticed last week. Upon discovering it and learning it could be cat acne I started using Hibiclens to clean the area and then applying a little big of Neosporin to the wound/scab.

Today after cleaning it a little bit I thought it was healing good but, noticed it was more of a lump/bubble. I was gently pressing near it trying to hold her (she hates that, and all of this business) while cleaning/applying the antibiotic and some blood/tiny amount of puss came out. The area became red of course from the blood flow, but of course I'm worried about the way it looks after. I cleaned her up again and applied a tiny dab of neosporin letting her do her thing.

I've got some pictures of it when I noticed it, after cleaning it and when stupidly bursting it.

When I first seen it. Terrible photos, sorry.

Here's after cleaning/antibiotic for about 2 days.

And then when it bled/tiny bit of puss came out I think ( was hard to tell with her squirming) + cleaned area/applied neosporin

Sorry for all the photos.

So basically I'm just looking for opinions on what  it could have been from ( cat acne? cat kept breaking scab off? ) and if I should be concerned it bubbled a bit with blood? Also the little hole concerns me, like a puncture mark, but she's in-doors only, but she does have a sister.

Appreciate any advice/help.

It doesn't look to be getting better. Have you called your vet? Also, please know that your should never use medications or ointments for humans on your cat without running it by the vet first. Some are ok, but not all.

If nothing else, can you email pictures to your Vet's office for them to take a look at it?  It could be chin acne, or it could be a rodent ulcer.  (or it could be something else entirely...some sort of abcess)

Does it seem to bother her, when YOU'RE not bugging her about it

My first thought was chin acne or ulcer as well.  If you don't already use stainless steel or ceramic bowls, I'd switch to those and clean them between feedings.  It could also be triggered by stress.  Did your routine change over the holiday?  Did you have new people in your home or did you go somewhere?  Sometimes those things can trigger an outbreak.

Hello, thank you for the replies everyone. Also, sorry for the late reply.

I did stop using the neosporin on her, but when I did it did

not have +pain stuff in it and she was and still is currently, wearing an e-collar for it. For the past couple days I've only used Hibiclens  twice a day and then cleaned the area with water.

She does have a stainless steel bowl, but does have a particular taste for licking plastics. I'm always constantly hiding everything that is wrapped or amde of the stuff in the cabinets, but every now and then you'll find that one item I've forgotten or didn't think of.

I should have mentioned this wasn't the first time I've come across a scab/wound like this, but this is the worst I've seen it. maybe around 4 years ago she I found one and switched from plastic bowls to steel.

But every now and then during the year I'd see a little scab. This time I think she just kept scratching it not letting it heal.

She also does get scared, and more than likely stressed by company. She's a very shy animal towards people shes even seen a lot through her whole life. So during the Holidays she stays in a room under the bed in a cosy box with food and water.

After using the hibiclens and water for two days cleaning it twice a day this is what it looks like now.

It seems to be healing better now, and I'll continue to check it/clean it during the day. Also good advice on emailing the vet pictures. My vet takes good care of my pets, but they do lean on the business side of things. I really do need to find a more caring one.

bonus pic of her with the home-made e-collar hehe. I will get her a soft one soon.

Sorry for the double post. I tried to edit, but I'm missing the pencil icon to do it.

Hopefully this picture is better for the first one.

It looks to be improving, so keep doing what you're doing.  I mentioned stress because I have a kitty who will break out with acne if she's stressed.  We also use stainless bowls, but she's also very sensitive to the change in the stress level of our house.  If her schedule changed at all before this happened, that might be the trigger.  Have you tried any calming agents to see if that will help?

Sorry to hear about your kitten breaking out during stress! This makes a lot of sense and could explain why I notice these scabs only about 2-4 times a year. It could be the holidays. Hopefully that and not a food allergy. Also, I haven't tried any calming agents ever, besides cat nip if that counts. Well, google said it was one, but I always figured that stuff would have the opposite effect. Do you have any recommendations for one?

Appreciate all your advice/info and hope you have a good new year!

I would keep cleaning it with Hibiclens.  If there is no more improvement after about a week, I would go to the doctor.  For calming agents, check out Feliway (that's what we use), Rescue Remedy, or some of the blends from Spirit Essences.
